Polish Minister Threatens Brussels: Brexit Proves There's a Future Outside the EU

Britain’s BREXIT vote proves to other EU member states that the European Union is not their only option for the future. That’s what a top Polish minister says.

Finance minister Pawel Szalamacha said in an interview that Britain’s vote in its BREXIT referendum has “demystified” the European Union. It shows, he claims, that the bloc is not “the only option” for Europe’s future.

As far as the minister is concerned, the Nordic countries are likely to follow Britain’s lead soon. And once they leave, many more members may choose to do the same.

The minister also said states may opt out of the union, as many feel “their destiny is no longer within their hands.”

He said: “I don’t think it’s a sensible policy just to rely on the decisions of the major international players.”

And he wasn’t quite done yet. Szalamacha also said that his own country demands some of its sovereignty back:

Mr Szalamacha also spoke about shifting the EU’s power away from Brussels, claiming Poland’s government – which he said was “stable and predictable” – deserves its “own development agenda.”

He added “the country needs to formulate on its own” and “put more stress on its domestic resources.”

BREXIT could very well mark the end of the EU as we know it. Let’s hope so. Brussels has become too powerful, too influential and too autocratic for its own sake. It’s time for European states to take their fate back into their own hands.
