Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse, one of the principled rising stars in the Republican Party, is not budging from his opposition to presumptive nominee Donald Trump. After Ted Cruz (arguably prematurely) suspended his campaign on Tuesday and John Kasich looks to suspend his later today, Sasse is still standing against The Donald.
Sasse responded to reporters who asked him whether the Indiana primary changed anything for his opposition to Trump. The answer: a brief and emphatic “no.”
Reporters keep asking if Indiana changes anything for me.
The answer is simple: No.This from Febr. still holds:https://t.co/yUNSZTHW7E

In that tweet, the senator included a link to a long open letter to Trump supporters he posted on Facebook back in February. Here it is. In that letter, Sasse emphatically reminded us that he’s not “an establishment Republican.” Rather, Sasse is “a movement conservative who was elected over the objections of the GOP establishment.” Sasse also pledged that he will never support Hillary Clinton. Sasse explained why America is an exceptional nation and why Trump would do the very opposite of “make it great again.” He quoted The Donald, who pledged to expand libel laws and prosecute people who attacked his record in the media. Finally, the Nebraska senator declared, “If Donald Trump becomes the Republican nominee, my expectation is that I will look for some third candidate — a conservative option, a Constitutionalist.” He is far from alone.
Overwhelming majority of Americans think both the D and R frontrunners are dishonest. The people are right. It matters.#WeCanDoBetter — Ben Sasse (@BenSasse) May 4, 2016
These declarations have made Sasse a hero among some conservative leaders.
Filling out paperwork for the kids’ summer mission trip, but I keep writing in “Ben Sasse” on all the blank lines…

This is a pivotal time in our nation’s history. The conservative party has arguably been usurped by a populist demagogue, and many true conservative leaders like Sasse cannot support it. The question is, where does #NeverTrump go from here? Google search traffic suggests the Libertarian Party.
