If Donald Trump wants to make sure no Ted Cruz supporter will ever vote for him, he’s doing a terrific job of it. How else to explain his most recent insult calling Cruz “an anchor baby in Canada”?
This is pure insanity… and it’s an entirely different kind of attack than what we’re used to in politics, especially because it involves two people from the same party. You can call Cruz “nasty,” a “maniac,” someone “nobody likes,” and you can even criticize him on his policy views. But this goes much further. This is deeply insulting and troubling.
Amazingly, Cruz himself doesn’t seem to be all that rattled by the attacks. As he explained on Hugh Hewitt’s show yesterday, he believes the attacks just mean that Trump fears him:
He’s undoubtedly right. If Trump were confident, he wouldn’t feel the need to lash out.
Although it’s easy to explain Trump’s despicable behavior, it doesn’t mean Cruz’s supporters will forgive him for it. The more personal the attacks, the more the billionaire businessman will alienate Cruz’s base, which means he’ll have to win the election — if he wins the nomination — without them. That means: without many members of the Tea Party and Evangelicals.
And that means he has signed his own political death warrant. If you didn’t know any better, you’d almost think he’s a Democratic plant whose only goal is to help Hillary Clinton get elected.
