Racial tensions in the United States are the highest they’ve been in the last 40 years or so, and things don’t seem to be calming down. Almost every time a black man is shot by police, it seems riots soon follow regardless of any facts in the case.
Luckily, the United Nations is on the case. While innocent people in the Middle East are being slaughtered by ISIS, and while North Korea moves closer (sort of) toward being a nuclear power while starving its citizens, the United Nations has its priorities straight — telling the U.S. to pay reparations for slavery.
The United States should give African Americans reparations for slavery, UN experts said Tuesday, warning that the country had not yet confronted its legacy of “racial terrorism.”
Amid a presidential election campaign in which racial rhetoric has played a central role, the UN working group on people of African descent warned that blacks in the US were facing a “human rights crisis.”
This has largely been fuelled by impunity for police officers who have killed a series of black men — many of them unarmed — across the country in recent months, the working group’s report said.
Of course, the report fails to pay attention to how often these so-called “unarmed” men aren’t that unarmed, or to how they commit acts that any reasonable person who isn’t a race-baiting moron would interpret as legitimate threats. Nope, no mention of that at all apparently.
But wait! There’s more!
“There has been no real commitment to reparations and to truth and reconciliation for people of African descent,” the report said.
Now, don’t get me wrong here. Some very crappy things have been done in this country, and we still need to work on improving racial relations even in this day and age. I get that.
I live in the Deep South, and just in my lifetime I’ve seen a lot of “truth and reconciliation” happening. We faced our racially charged demons and, in a lot of ways, pushed past them. There’s been a lot of work toward those ends…only without forcing people who were never slave owners to pay money to people who have never been slaves.
All that work, however, has been undone by the last eight years of “racial healing” under the direction of our first black president.
Yep, we’re still so racist that a black man got elected to the highest office in this land. Twice.
The UN poking their noses in isn’t likely to help the current situation either. Instead, it will be touted as proof that the United States is some kind of habitual human-rights abuser rather than a nation that has put that history behind it.
This is yet more proof that the UN is a waste of time and money.
