Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) used props of a tapered candle and a light bulb to try to convey his point that both parties are prisoners of the past” in Washington.
“They’re all trapped in the age of candles,” the 2012 candidate for the GOP presidential nomination said, maintaining “the Republican establishment is just plain wrong about how it approaches politics.”
“We don’t need new principles but we need lots of ideas about how to implement those principles,” he continued, adding it is “virtually impossible to get people in D.C. to learn to think about a new world.”
“We stand on the edge of a great future, but Washington is blind in both parties.”
Gingrich said it’s not an issue of left or right, red or blue, but going up or down. And he agreed with Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal’s (R) assertion that the “dominant wing of this party” is mired in stupidity.
“We are not in the business of just balancing the budget as the book accountants of liberals,” he said. “…This is much more than fighting over numbers. It’s a fight over values.”
“We are not the anti-Obama movement; we’re for empowering individuals, not empowering bureaucrats,” Gingrich continued, adding the “right to life, right to a good life, will inevitably be the majority party.”
The Catholic speaker added he’s “very excited about Pope Francis, who Ibelieve is going to challenge all of us.”
Gingrich opined the new pontiff will challenge the left on social policy, and challenge the right to think about the poor.
