He also gave credit to President Obama at the Rhode Island fundraiser: “He’s also one smart son of a gun.”

Biden said in his remarks, according to the White House pool report, that America is destined to “leap forward” and overtake China’s booming economy.

“You can’t think different in a society that does not allow free speech,” he said at a fundraiser for Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.). “You’re going to see millions of jobs coming back.”

Last week, Biden entertained visiting Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, saying at a U.S. Chamber of Commerce event, “We believe that a rising China is a positive development — not only for China but also for the United States and the world.  It will fuel economic growth and prosperity, and a rising China will bring to the fore a new partner with whom we can have help meeting the global challenges we all face.”

The vice president helped Whitehouse raise cash by offering photos with donors at $5,000 a pop.

Biden also praised the late father of Gov. Lincoln Chafee, Republican Sen. John Chafee, as a “man of character,” adding, “This is not your father’s Republican Party.”
