VP Biden 'Not Second-Guessing' China's One-Child Policy? (Update: Obama administration 'clarifies')

Wow.

What we ended up doing is setting up a system whereby we did cut by $1.2 trillion upfront, the deficit over the next 10 years.  And we set up a group of senators that have to come up with another $1.2 to $1.7 trillion in savings or automatically there will be cuts that go into effect in January to get those savings.  So the savings will be accomplished.  But as I was talking to some of your leaders, you share a similar concern here in China.  You have no safety net.  Your policy has been one which I fully understand — I’m not second-guessing — of one child per family.  The result being that you’re in a position where one wage earner will be taking care of four retired people.  Not sustainable.

So hopefully we can act in a way on a problem that’s much less severe than yours, and maybe we can learn together from how we can do that.

China’s one-child policy results in forced abortions and forced sterilizations. For anyone who wants to keep “the government out of our bedrooms” or any other cliched formulation along those lines, one-child ought to be an abomination. Among other things, one-child is very anti-choice, and very pro-abortion. Has Biden finally pulled the Band Aid off that particular lie of the left?

One-child is as repugnant a government policy as one is likely to find. And as even Biden recognizes, one-child has led to a weird and very uncertain future for China, which not only will burden its future generations with taking care of a larger retired generation, that generation will be a generation with a heavy excess in the male side of the population. That is bad for China and may end up being bad for its neighbors.

If there’s a government policy on earth that’s worth second guessing, and condemning in the strongest moral terms, it’s China’s policy regarding its children. That Biden refuses to morally condemn such an abhorrent policy tells us just how far into the clutches of Planned Parenthood, which is not pro-choice but pro-abortion, he and the administration truly are.

Update: The administration got some justified blowback, and has sought to clarify its position on China’s forced abortion policy.

“The Obama Administration strongly opposes all aspects of China’s coercive birth limitation policies, including forced abortion and sterilization,” Biden’s spokeswoman Kendra Barkoff told The Daily Caller in an email. “The Vice President believes such practices are repugnant.”

Barkoff explained that Biden was attempting to critique the restrictive system with his comments.

“He also pointed out, in China, that the policy is, as a practical matter, unsustainable,” Barkoff added. “He was arguing against the One Child Policy to a Chinese audience. ”
