I have no idea how many times I'd already been called a Nazi on Twitter by some permanently raging prog before I heard of Godwin's Law.
For those who may be unfamiliar with it, the present-day wording of Godwin's Law is: "As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches."
I had always assumed it was a social media era thing until I read a guest Op-Ed in The Washington Post written by Mike Godwin, the man for whom the law is named. He made it popular in 1990, back in the USENET days, but gives attribution to someone named Leo Strauss for coming up with something similar before Godwin was even born. WaPo had recruited Godwin to give his blessing to anyone who wanted to compare Donald Trump to Hitler. Godwin's diaper-filling screed would be the focus of my final "Trump Derangement Syndrome Meltdown of the Week" column of 2023.
As with everything the progressives do, they always get the Nazi/Hitler name-calling wrong. Even though the word socialism is in the name, leftist keyboard warriors insist that it was a right-wing effort because that's what Wikipedia told them.
Leftists like to call anyone on the right "Nazi" or "Hitler" for two reasons: they're lazy and they're ignorant. The epithet works for them when applied to any law that conservatives support because anything they don't like is mean and totalitarian.
While heavy-handed totalitarianism was a hallmark of Hitler and the Nazis, the clinically insane hatred of all Jews was the real calling card. American leftists never dwell on that, and for a very good reason: most of them are raging anti-Semites.
Oh, they spent a lot of time trying to keep that under wraps, but the Hamas attacks last October and Israel's necessary response have peeled that mask off.
Democrats have been apologists for Islamic terrorists since around Halloween 2001. Yeah, there were a few weeks where they were on board with despising not only the people responsible but the ideology that killed thousands of Americans on 9/11. It didn't take long after that, however, for them to start barking "Islamophobia!" like mentally defective seals.
While it's true that the Jihadis hate everyone who isn't a follower of Islam, they have a particular hatred for — can we get a drumroll, Adolf — the Jews.
In all the time that the Democrats have been pretending that terrorism is merely an aberration in the more Muslim parts of the world, they've been consciously or subconsciously stoking the fire of anti-Semitism in their hearts.
Hey, unlike Angel Hernandez, I call 'em accurately.
It's not a Godwin's Law thing anymore. The progs have — in some cases — literally gone all "Heil Hitler!" (Grayson wrote about it the other day.)
Progressives, commies, Nazis...toh-MAY-toh/toh-MAH-to. As my friend Stephen Green wrote on Wednesday, kinda the same thing. I have one simple condition that has to be met to get me to stop referring to the "Free Palestine" mob as Brownshirts and Hitler Youth: They have to stop acting like Brownshirts and Hitler Youth.
