Sternly Worded Letter Time!
While House Democrats continued to screech about impeachment without doing any actual impeachment-y stuff, while the president and his legal team continued their preemptive counteroffensive.
On Tuesday, the White House sent a defiant 8-page letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, condemning her announced impeachment inquiry and warning that the Trump administration will not comply with the “illegitimate and unconstitutional” effort. Echoing House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, the letter claims that the proceedings have violated congressional norms and the president’s due process rights.
The Dems have been flailing ever since Grandma Nan decided to get on board. Trump and company are probably creating an environment for the opposition to commit more unforced errors, which will no doubt happen.
In casting himself as the victim, the president shores up his base, which he does brilliantly anyway. Pelosi’s non-plan is making it even easier for Trump to play the victim card these days.
The wording of the letter is brilliant fundraising stuff:
“President Trump and his administration reject your baseless, unconstitutional efforts to overturn the democratic process,” states the letter, first published at Fox News. “Your unprecedented actions have left the president with no choice. In order to fulfill his duties to the American people, the Constitution, the Executive Branch, and all future occupants of the Office of the Presidency, President Trump and his administration cannot participate in your partisan and unconstitutional inquiry under these circumstances.”
“In the history of our nation, the House of Representatives has never attempted to launch an impeachment inquiry against the president without a majority of the House taking political accountability for that decision by voting to authorize such a dramatic constitutional step,” the letter states.
That’s the second “put up or shut up” notice given to the House Democrats in the last week or so, and they will obviously do neither any time soon.
Pelosi responded with tired threat rhetoric but no coherent outline for proceeding with a transparent inquiry. Now that it’s apparent that the AOC Squad wing of the party is pulling Pelosi’s strings, nothing sensible will happen any time soon.
Humor Me
My PJ Media colleague Matt Margolis has joined forces with illustrator John Cox to launch “Margolis and Cox Editorial Cartoons.”
The political world is in dire need of some levity and humor these days, and it’s nice to see some coming from the right. Conservatives are terribly under-represented in the editorial cartoon genre and I’m looking forward to sharing a lot of these here in the Briefing.
Here is a sample from opening week:
