A federal judge on Wednesday ordered the U.S. Election Assistance Commission to help Kansas and Arizona enforce laws requiring new voters to provide proof of their U.S. citizenship.
U.S. District Judge Eric Melgren in Wichita, Kan., ruled the commission has no legal authority to deny requests from Kansas and Arizona to add state-specific instructions to a national voter registration form. Melgren ordered the commission to immediately revise the national form.
The states and their top election officials — secretaries of state Kris Kobach of Kansas and Ken Bennett of Arizona, both conservative Republicans — sued the agency to force the action.
Predictably, there is the usual whining from Democrats about “voter suppression”, which in modern leftist political parlance means, “having any rules for voting at all”. They weave a sob-inducing tale of untold millions of American citizens who just have no way of getting any identification or documentation by election day here in the 21st Century. If that were actually the case, given the ID requirements for so many things in everyday life, the lefties would be screaming for a federal ID assistance program.
By the way, the Republicans involved in this suit and mentioned in the article are labeled “conservative” but the Democrat mentioned isn’t referred to as a “liberal”. That’s another nifty old school media bias trick that’s supposed to make conservative views appear fringe and liberal views mainstream, even though the opposite is most often true.
