Say what you want about Steve Banon — and I certainly have — but he’s a frickin’ political genius. Based on observable evidence, he’s probably the smartest, most insightful analyst in the game.
That doesn’t make him flawless, of course. Very often, great thinkers cast very deep shadows. Their brains are structured in such a way that the highs are very high, but alas, the lows are forebodingly low.
Perhaps that's the tradeoff of genius — the horrible, inevitable curse that Tennessee Williams once described as, “If I got rid of my demons, I’d lose my angels.” With certain kinds of people, maybe we just have to accept the good with the bad.
Either way, Steve Bannon NAILED the papal election of Leo XIV. And so far, he hasn’t received the credit he deserves.
There’s a video you need to see. It’s from eight days ago.
Could the next Pope be the first American-born one?

Steve Bannon: "I do think one of the dark horses - and unfortunately one of the most progressive - is Cardinal Prevost... he's certainly on the shortlist."

MORGAN: There’s never been an American-born pope. Is this the moment?
BANNON: I do think one of the dark horses that, I think, unfortunately, is one of the most progressive is Cardinal Robert Prevost. I don’t think he’s getting enough play [attention from the media and public]. He’s certainly on the shortlist… and I think it’s pretty shocking given the contempt [the Vatican has for] the American church. The American church gives so much money. They are afraid it has too much power. So they never really want to have an American pope. But my understanding is Prevost is one of the ones closest to Francis ideologically. He’s also had tremendous experience in Latin America. And so, he’s one of the ones on the shortlist. [emphasis added]
That Vatican City election wasn’t an easy one to decipher. Exit polling, as you know, was minimal. (NBC News reported that Pope Leo XIV received 0% of the female vote. Very embarrassing. Meanwhile, “Doctor” Jill Biden and the DNC assured us that Pope Francis was “as sharp as a tack” and could still do the job if necessary.)
That was a tough veil to pierce.
Nonetheless, Steve Bannon’s papal prophecy wasn’t a Monday Morning quarterback kinda thing. He called his shot a week ahead of time!
You’ve gotta admit, that’s pretty impressive.

Final thoughts on our pal Steve Bannon: There’s an old financial disclaimer we’ve all heard a zillion times, “past performance is no guarantee of future results.”
And it’s a true statement. Winners go on losing streaks and losers go on winning streaks. If you wait long enough, even the lousy, no-good Philadelphia Eagles will win a Super Bowl. (TWO of ‘em!)
But it’s also true that a long, comprehensive track record of nailing political predictions is a helluva good indicator that this person’s voice is worth listening to. So, after all this evidence, when Bannon says something, it’s smarter to assume that he’s right rather than wrong.
Past performance might not guarantee future results, but it can sure point you in the right direction.
Ignore Bannon at your own peril.
