And you thought we were done with “is it stupidity or malice?” during the Obama years.
Apparently not.
Because today we get this:
Baldilocks might be absolutely right when she thinks they’re avoiding pronouncing the word “Christian” because there’s power in the word “Christ.”
On the other hand, for those of a less mystical disposition, it’s easier to believe they’re trying to avoid saying the word “Christian” for the same reason they’re not naming the religion of the attackers — because their idea of citizens are mushrooms who are kept in the dark and fed… er… the end product of digestion.
I mean, note the “on this holy weekend for many faiths,” which, at last count, includes TWO faiths, i.e. Judaism and Christianity.
The other thing that can’t be ignored, though, is the possibility that they really are that stupid. I mean that they really, really are that stupid.
Let’s remember the New York Times, with its layers and layers of fact-checkers, thought that the “body of Christ,” which the hero-priest of Notre Dame saved, was “a statue of Jesus.”
This Free Beacon article details some other bizarre confusions about a religion that, whether you are a member or not, is a foundational culture of the West.
For instance, this one:
Ironically, the phrase “body of Christ” has led to this sort of mix-up before. The Washington Post‘s Kathleen Parker was horrified, just horrified that Ted Cruz said during a rally that “the body of Christ” should “rise up” to support him. “I don’t know anyone who takes their religion seriously who would think that Jesus should rise from the grave and resurrect himself to serve Ted Cruz,” she complained.
I understand being somewhat weirded out by that whole transubstantiation thing we Catholics believe in — I’m just amazed that more Catholics aren’t science fiction and fantasy writers. I mean, seriously, guys, why are we letting Mormons take point on the idea that the church as the “body of Christ” is a cross-Christian one?
Also, I thought everyone knew that Christians believed that Christ already “resurrected himself.”
Only, it’s apparently complete news to the New York Times, which has made other embarrassing mistakes on the Resurrection before. For instance, as this New York Post article explains:
It’s hard to top this correction the venerable paper ran in 2013: “An earlier version of this article mischaracterized the Christian holiday of Easter. It is the celebration of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead, not his resurrection into heaven.”
A reporter for the paper had apparently confused the resurrection with the ascension into heaven.
The following year, the paper once again botched the resurrection in an article on Israeli tourism. “Nearby, the vast Church of the Holy Sepulcher marking the site where many Christians believe Jesus is buried, usually packed with pilgrims, was echoing and empty,” observed the Times.
Again, the whole point of the resurrection is that Jesus rose from his tomb. He isn’t buried anywhere.
But perhaps not. The other strange error the Free Beacon details is the idea that, wait for it…
Is it really too much to ask that the pundits who weigh in on and the journalists who report on Christian matters know the first thing about Christianity? It’s embarrassing when reporters botch stories on say, Judaism (like the AP reporter who thought Jews “sit and shiver”.)
And you guys wonder why I call the Babylon Bee “America’s Paper of Record.” I mean they’re less of a joke than the New York Times.
At this rate, I keep expecting the Times to report that Buddhists are great fans of the band Nirvana.
At least there they’d have an excuse. Okay, no, not really, not for that monumental level of stupidity, but kind of, since Buddhism, important though it is as a world religion, is not foundational to the society the Times reporters live and operate in.
But how can anyone really be that ignorant of a religion that not only permeates our culture and formed the basis to a lot of the beliefs we commonly hold, but also the basis of most of our literature? I read the King James Bible (no, not what I grew up with) because I loved Shakespeare, for instance.
Particularly, how can anyone Hillary’s age — i.e. brought up before the left took the culture and education (in a beautiful little basket with streamers) on the fast track to hell — not realize that the “Easter worshipers” language is nonsense? “The faithful celebrating Easter” would obscure that the victims are Christian just as much as the nonsense she spewed — and not make her sound like an illiterate moron.
Not that I think the identity of the worshippers should be obscured. But the left seems to have evolved from simply mocking, despising, and attempting to bait Christians, to trying to erase us from culture, history, and social life.
My fans are fond of referring to the left as Those Who Are No Longer Our Countrymen, but I’m starting to fear it’s worse than that. They’re apparently trying to secede from all of Western civilization, probably in pursuit of those noble savages that in Occasional Cortex’s fevered fantasies have the power to heal the whole Earth through magical genes or something (as opposed to having the power of casinos).
They truly are the enemy within, dismantling a civilization they can’t even comprehend while imagining themselves superior to those who built it and sustain it.
Pray for them. Pray very hard. Without a miracle, this will end in tears. And likely blood.
