What Are America's Favorite Dog Breeds? 2025 Saw Some Changes in the Top 10

Do you have a favorite dog breed?

Even though I've never owned one, I've always wanted a Newfoundland. I fell in love with them years ago. Plus, I love extra-large dogs, and I love dogs that love to swim. They both fall into that category. Unfortunately, my conscience only leads me to shelter mutts and strays, but maybe one day.

In case you aren't familiar, here's a funny look at life with a Newfoundland (apologies for the language in the X post):

Apparently, most of the rest of the country doesn't agree with me. The American Kennel Club (AKC) recently released its annual list of the most popular dog breeds in the United States for 2025, and of the 202 dogs on the list, Newfoundlands landed at 46.

The French bulldog topped the list once again as the country's favorite dog breed, a title it's held since 2022. The AKC attributes this to its size and adaptability, stating that it's a good dog for apartment dwellers and people with smaller homes and yards. I love all dogs, so don't come at me, but I can't ever imagine myself owning one of these. I don't get this French bulldog craze. Again, I prefer big dogs anyway.

In case you aren't familiar, here's a funny video about French bulldogs (I apologize in advance for the language, but it cracked me up):

The Labrador retriever and golden retriever came in at numbers two and three. These dogs are more my speed. The German shepherd came in at number four. And there's a new breed rounding out the top five: the Dachshund. Last year, poodles were number five, but they came in at number six this year.

Admittedly, if I had to get a tiny dog, I could go for a Dachshund. I have a friend who has several, and they're so cute and mischievous. Apparently, this guy makes videos for almost every dog breed. Here's one for a mini Dachshund (again, sorry for the language):

As I said, poodles were number six, followed by beagles at number seven, rottweilers at eight, German shorthaired pointers (GSP) at nine, and bulldogs at 10. Bulldogs actually decreased in popularity, while the GSPs are becoming more of an American favorite. And yes, there's a video for that one too.

Some other breeds on the list beyond the top 10 that made big jumps in popularity include the Bergamasco sheepdog, English foxhound, black and tan coonhound, English toy spaniel, Irish setter, field spaniel, Greater Swiss mountain dog, Norwegian Buhund, pointer, treeing Walker coonhound, Neapolitan mastiff, American hairless terrier, Scottish deerhound, and the giant schnauzer.

The breed that saw the biggest jump in popularity was the wirehaired vizsla. I did a little research and found that they are high-energy but also considered "velcro dogs" in that they become extremely attached to their owners. They're also adorable.

Rounding out the rest of the top 20 were the:

11. Cane Corso

12. Cavalier King Charles spaniel

13. Yorkshire terrier

14. Australian shepherd

15. Doberman pinscher

16. Pembroke Welsh corgi

17. Miniature schnauzer

18. Boxer

19. Pomeranian

20. Bernese mountain dog
