MSNBC Host's Fact-Free Conspiracy Theory about Who Is Responsible for Chemical Attack in Syria

Lawrence O’Donnell, who hosts “The Last Word” (in lunacy) on MSNBC, is well known for his hysterical rants against not only Donald Trump but just about any conservative who gets in his sights.

But O’Donnell outdid himself the other night when he advanced the cockamamie theory that the gas attack in Syria was actually ordered by President Vladimir Putin.

The reason is obvious — at least, to loons like O’Donnell. President Trump needed people to be distracted from his Russia problems, so Putin decided to help his old buddy Donald out.

Washington Post:

That theory — evidence-free — was laid out on a small anti-Trump website shortly after the missile strike.

But it went mainstream Friday night, when Lawrence O’Donnell advanced similar speculation on his MSNBC show, “The Last Word.”

“Wouldn’t it be nice,” O’Donnell asked a nodding, smiling Rachel Maddow, “if it was just completely, totally, absolutely impossible to suspect that Vladimir Putin orchestrated what happened in Syria this week — so that his friend in the White House could have a big night with missiles and all the praises he’s picked up over the past 24 hours?”

The theory was impossible to rule out, O’Donnell said, because of the Trump campaign’s ties to the Russian government.

A few minutes later, the host elaborated on his theory under banner text: “Wag The Dog?” — recalling a similar conspiracy theory that President Bill Clinton launched missiles in 1998 to distract from his own scandal.

“It changes the conventional wisdom about the dynamic between President Trump and Vladimir Putin,” O’Donnell said. “President Trump has finally dared to do something Vladimir Putin doesn’t like. It changes everything.”

O’Donnell didn’t offer any evidence on his theory, promising only that “you won’t hear … proof that the scenario I’ve just outlined is impossible.”

Proving something is impossible is, well, impossible. But that didn’t stop our intrepid reporter from digging into the fever swamps of the internet to emerge with this twaddle.

What O’Donnell  and most liberals  are terribly upset about is that their fact-free narrative about Trump campaign “collusion” with the Russians just blew up in their face. After all, it wouldn’t be very friendly of The Donald to be in Putin’s hip pocket and then go ahead and bomb his buddy Assad.

So O’Donnell applies a master stroke of misdirection and disinformation by claiming that Putin actually wanted the U.S. to bomb the snot out of Assad and that he went so far as ordering his puppet to carry out the gas attack.

Brilliant. Lunacy, but brilliant.

I had no idea O’Donnell could be so entertaining. I think I will watch his show, “The Last Word” (in lunacy), from now on.
