Speaker Ryan: 'An Attack on One of Us Is an Attack on All of Us'

Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) addressed today’s shooting. Standing on the floor of the House of Representatives, he fought back tears as he said, “We are united. We are united in our shock, we are united in our anguish. An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us.” Republican Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA), congressional staffer Zachary Barth, lobbyist Matt Mika, and two Capitol Police officers were shot by a gunman who was apparently targeting them for being Republicans. They were practicing for the annual congressional charity baseball game. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has admitted that the gunman volunteered for his presidential campaign, and a search of the killer’s Facebook shows that he suggested President Trump and other members of the GOP should be killed. It was therefore all the more important for Ryan to present such a united front. Ryan lauded Democrats who led a prayer group for their GOP colleagues today, and his speech received several bipartisan standing ovations.
