Mom Shaming: The Ugly Side of Motherhood

The mommy wars are here to stay and apparently it’s on like Donkey Kong. It’s called “mom shaming” and judge-y moms leave no subject off limits. Who the heck asked you anyway? Here are some issues that you may be targeted for by your mom posse.

1. Organic Snacks vs. Non-Organic

Most mothers take great care when deciding what to feed their children. There are so many options now that it can be confusing and sometimes frustrating. There are words like GMO, organic, gluten-free, and the list goes on. If you don’t choose organic (and spend 50% more), somehow you are falling short as a mother. Some mums go way overboard on this one, making the mother who doesn’t make every speck of food she feeds to her child organic feel shamed. Some choose not to, or don’t believe it’s any big deal. Here’s the lowdown: it’s ok. Your child is going to be just fine if he has white bread instead of the gluten-free, GMO-free, and taste-free options.

2. Breastfeeding vs. Bottle

You’ve probably heard sometime during your journey through motherhood that “breast is best.” I believe it, and that’s why I chose to nurse all of my children. Some mums chastise other mums if they don’t breastfeed, as if it’s some form of  intentional torture of the child. They jam it down their throats and try and make them feel awful. But if, for some reason, you can’t breastfeed or don’t want to, your child is going to be ok! Your decision to breastfeed (or not) is not a measure of how much you love your children. They won’t remember which way you fed them and they will survive! So relax and stop judging!

3. Stay-at-Home Moms vs. Working Moms

Now, I have personally been both. When I was a stay-at-home mom I was judged—a lot. I would get questions like “what do you do all day?” and “wow, that must be really boring, I could never do that.” It was the best thing I ever did for my children, but that’s just one mom’s opinion. It was a lot of work, but so rewarding for the kids and me. I have also experienced the corporate world. Equally as hard. Juggling kids, job, home, and all of the other responsibilities of life was stressful. Stay-at-home moms point the finger and accuse the working mom of being selfish and caring for her children less. I’ve got news for you: sometimes women have to work to feed their families. So what do you say, ladies? Can we cut each other a break? Both can be exhausting and each individual woman knows what’s best for her family!

Have you ever been “mom shamed”? Leave me a comment! I love to hear from you.
