President Donald Trump said his administration might find the emails deleted from former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s private server when she served in the Obama administration.
“We may find them somewhere deep in the State Department,” Trump said during his 2020 re-election campaign kickoff rally in Orlando on Tuesday evening. “But can you imagine if I got a subpoena — think of this — if I got a subpoena for emails, if I deleted one email, like, a love note for Melania, it’s the electric chair for Trump,” he added.
Trump said that Clinton and her aides got “a free pass” while he was scrutinized during the Russia probe, which he argued is evidence of a “rigged system.”
“We now have a great attorney general. Let’s see what happens,” Trump said.
Clinton and her campaign had said the emails were deleted before a congressional subpoena was issued on March 4, 2015. According to the FBI’s investigation into Clinton’s private email server, the emails were erased “sometime after March 25, 2015,” as reported by Politifact. In the past, Clinton said the deleted emails were not relevant to her work as secretary of state.
