'House of Cards' President 'Not Going to Get Involved in Real Politics'

Academy Award-winning actor Kevin Spacey declined to comment on the 2016 presidential race but said he hopes the role of money in the political process “starts to change.”

Spacey was asked about Republican frontrunner Donald Trump self-financing his presidential campaign.

“I’m not going to get involved in real politics. When I did that Abramoff movie I think that anyone has talked a great deal about the influence money has had on politics and I hope we can get to a point where that starts to change,” Spacey said at the House of Cards Season 4 premiere in Washington.

Spacey lamented the amount of influence money has on politics while promoting his film Casino Jack, which told the story of former lobbyist Jack Abramoff who was sentenced to federal prison for fraud and corruption.

“I think that there is no doubt that the amount of influence and power and money dampens the political process. I think it discourages people from public office,” Spacey said in 2010.

Spacey was asked on the red carpet if politicians are seeking out his endorsement as a celebrity.

“I’m an actor, so I guess they should go and ask some celebrity, but I’m an actor. I have a profession. I work every day as an actor. I am not a celebrity,” he said.

Actress Neve Campbell, who plays Leann Harvey in House of Cards, told reporters she is “leaning towards” supporting Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders but declined to elaborate.

“I don’t want to get into my politics, if that’s OK,” she said.

Campbell told PJM she is writing a series about the Department of Veterans Affairs with her partner, JJ Field.

“I have very strong feelings about what’s going on with the VA and about the soldiers today, and how they are being taken care of and lack thereof,” she said.

Campbell, originally from Canada, said she is not related to any veterans in the U.S.

“But in researching I’ve made a lot of friends who are vets,” she said.

Nathan Darrow, who plays Edward Meechum in the series, told PJM that Election Day should be a holiday.

“It should just be a damn holiday where people don’t work, where you can vote or you can sit on your butt and not vote, but still you have the time and eventually you are going to know everybody is out there voting and, what am I doing, maybe,” he said on the red carpet.
