Vice President Joe Biden assured gun-rights advocates that the federal government would not create a federal “central registry” containing gun owners’ personal information if Congress passes universal background check legislation.
Biden also called an effort by a group of Republican senators to block gun control legislation “embarrassing” and “mind boggling.”
“There is no record kept in some big database,” Biden said, holding an example of a background check form at the White House on Tuesday alongside Attorney General Eric Holder.
“No record’s kept of your name. No record’s kept of your request…no central registry for anything.”
The former Delaware senator continued to downplay the concerns of gun control critics, saying, “No way that Uncle Sam can go find out whether you own a gun because we’re about to really take away all your rights and you’re not going to be able to defend yourself and we’re going to swoop down with special forces folks and gather up every gun in America. It’s bizarre.”
Biden asked the audience of law enforcement officials to “imagine” what the leaders of other countries are thinking about a Republican threat to block any gun control legislation in the Senate.
“I served in the Senate for 36 years and you’ve got 13 senators including the minority leader saying I will filibuster proceeding on dealing with this national tragedy,” said Biden.
“What an embarrassing thing to say. Imagine what they’re saying in other capitals around the world today. I’m being serious now. Just close your eyes and imagine. The rest of the world follows everything we do.”
