It’s hard to know what was more eyebrow-raising, the statement that President Trump made or that he would dare admit weakness and vulnerability. Humility isn’t his strong suit, after all.
The president held a post-acquittal victory lap with supporters, key senators, and lawyers at the White House, which was broadcast live.
So it was quite notable when Trump said, “If I hadn’t fired [FBI Director] James Comey, I might not be standing here today.”
Trump said we “caught him in the act” and that one key decision saved his presidency.
He later said that Senator Chuck Grassley — a “man that has a voice that scares you” — questioning Comey in a Senate hearing was also key. He said of Comey, “he admitted leaking, lying … he choked.”
President Trump was alluding to the fact that the former FBI director oversaw and participated in the investigation into his campaign and presidency, using illegal FISA warrants to spy on him. The questions resulted in the Trump-Russia allegations, the Mueller investigation, and, as the president said, ruining peoples’ lives to “inflict political pain.”
