On Monday evening, Nate Silver shared the front page of Tuesday’s New York Times, faulting the paper for the headline “TRUMP URGES UNITY VS. RACISM.” As PJ Media’s Stephen Kruiser reported, the Times yielded quickly to pressure from 2020 Democrats like Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.). But as always, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) had the crazy leftist take.
“Let this front page serve as a reminder of how white supremacy is aided by – and often relies upon – the cowardice of mainstream institutions,” AOC tweeted.
Never mind the simple fact that President Donald Trump did indeed urge unity against racism.
“The shooter in El Paso posted a manifesto online consumed by racist hate. In one voice, our nation must condemn racism, bigotry, and white supremacy,” Trump declared. “Hatred warps the mind, ravages the heart, and devours the soul.”
“We cannot allow ourselves to feel powerless. We can and will stop this evil contagion. In that task we must honor the sacred memory of those we have lost by acting as one people,” he said. “We must seek real, bipartisan solutions.”
It is not cowardice for The New York Times to report the truth of Trump’s statement. Contrary to the protestations of Democrats, the president is nothing like a white supremacist or a white nationalist. The president does not advocate for a separate government based on race and he does not advocate for white people to rule over those of other races.
Trump’s statement on Monday morning condemning racism is the furthest thing from white supremacy, but in the eyes of Democrats like AOC, it seems the president is no more racist than when he is denouncing racism.
The original Times headline was not cowardice. But its decision to cave to Democrat protests and change its headline certainly was cowardly. Can’t America’s newspaper of record grow a spine and stand up to the far left to report the truth? Evidently not.
