Real Planned Parenthood Quote: 'It's Our Responsibility to Use Our Superpowers to Slay'

In a new fundraising campaign, the nation’s largest abortion provider joked about getting Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003) director Joss Whedon to direct a new ad. Inadvertently, Planned Parenthood seems to have admitted that its primary function is “to slay.”

“If there’s anything we’ve learned from Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire SlayerFireflyThe Avengers) over the years, it’s this — every single one of us has a hero inside; and it’s our responsibility to use our superpowers to slay,” reads a landing page on Planned Parenthood’s Internet portal.

For an organization whose affiliates perform over 300,000 abortions per year to advocate using “superpowers to slay” seems ironically fitting, but not very flattering to Planned Parenthood. Naturally, the site did not explain exactly what it meant by “slaying” and it seems merely a throwaway reference to Whedon’s famous television show.

“Planned Parenthood and the 2.5 million people our health centers serve every year could sure use a lot more superheroes right now,” the landing page added. “So, Joss Whedon used hissuperpower [sic]: he made a powerful and chilling short film, UNLOCKED, about what people’s lives would look like without Planned Parenthood. Did we say it was chilling? Yeah. Very.”

The site pushed supporters to watch the video, “add your name to join Joss Whedon in standing with Planned Parenthood, and then share, share, share, using #IStandWithPP. That’s how we slay, that’s how we win.”

The video itself follows a few different women whose lives are “saved” by Planned Parenthood. One woman passes away from breast cancer without the organization, but the cancer is found early and treated thanks to Planned Parenthood. A teenage girl gets pregnant and looks longingly at a college application letter without Planned Parenthood, but later in the video she can attend university thanks to … well, “slaying” perhaps?

The movie is not nearly as “chilling” as Hulu’s series The Handmaid’s Tale, which no less a figure than former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said would be the natural result of Planned Parenthood losing taxpayer funding.

Perhaps little can be quite as chilling as the fact that millions of unborn babies have perished thanks to Planned Parenthood, and that such an organization thinks it can joke using the word “slaying.”

Such a gaffe might have been inevitable, however, when working with Joss Whedon. After all, this is the same Joss Whedon who sexualized and mocked young female cancer survivors when they met with House Speaker Paul Ryan. Yes, the same House speaker Whedon called a “GOP murder bro” and said he wanted “a rhino to f**k … to death.”

Whedon also hasn’t been above personally attacking those close to President Donald Trump. He not so subtly called first daughter Ivanka Trump a b*tch, and her husband Jared Kushner “Voldemort in training.”

In fact, it’s almost a miracle Whedon’s video, “UNLOCKED,” doesn’t feature personal slights and attacks on innocent people or on those loosely connected to Republican leaders. But he’s got time — keep an eye out for his future work, and other videos supporting Planned Parenthood’s “slaying.”

They certainly put the vampire slayer to shame…
