The Fantastically Successful, Incredibly Cynical Democratic Exploitation of Trump's Idiotic Border Policy

The Trump administration decided that it would be in the best interest of illegal alien children to separate them from their parents who are apprehended at the border. Or, they believe that separating families will deter others from trying to cross the border illegally.

Or, they have absolutely no idea what they’re doing and are ripping nursing babies from their mothers’ breasts because they’re cruel and hate Hispanics.

Whatever else you can say about official U.S. policy of separating illegal alien families at the border, you have to admit it is marvelous political theater. It gives conservatives a chance to thump their chest about border security and liberals the opportunity to emote to their hearts’ content. It allows pundits to stretch their vocabulary to find ever more novel and unique ways to express their outrage.

It wouldn’t be a Trump administration scandal without a series of outrageous lies from the president.

President Donald Trump on Monday once again wrongly blamed Democrats for his administration’s migrant family separation policy — one that he could end whenever he chooses.

Faced with mounting condemnation of the practice, the president dodged responsibility for splitting up families who have crossed U.S. borders illegally. Trump urged Congress to pass a broader immigration bill that meets his strict demands for border security.

“And I say it’s — very strongly — the Democrats’ fault. They’re really obstructionist and they are obstructing. The United States will not be a migrant camp and it will not be a refugee holding facility — won’t be,” Trump said at an event about promoting American activity in space.

“And I say it’s — very strongly — the Democrats’ fault. They’re really obstructionist and they are obstructing. The United States will not be a migrant camp and it will not be a refugee holding facility — won’t be,” Trump said at an event about promoting American activity in space.

The president added: “If the Democrats would sit down instead of obstructing, we could have something done very quickly. Good for the children, good for the country, good for the world. It could take place quickly. We could have an immigration bill, we could have child separation. We’re stuck with these horrible laws. They’re horrible laws. What’s happening is so sad. It’s so sad. And it can be taken care of quickly and beautifully and we’ll have safety.”

Anyone with an internet connection can easily discover that the president is lying. The family separation policy is the result of AG Sessions’ deliberate decision to establish a “zero tolerance” policy on illegals. This, in and of itself, is not a bad thing. The executive branch is granted wide latitude in how it enforces the law and the law says you can’t enter the country illegally. Period. The Obama administration chose not to enforce the law. Trump has chosen the opposite.

But what makes the Democrats’ attacks so cynical is that they were strangely silent about President Obama’s hiding more than 90,000 illegal alien kids who crossed the border unaccompanied by a parent. They, too, were kept in horrible conditions, caged up for months. Do Democrats only care about illegal alien kids when a Republican is president?

Where the administration’s policy went off the rails, over the cliff, and up, up and away was in the decision by immigration authorities to act as if the parents were going to be incarcerated in San Quentin rather than kept in minimum security facilities. You wouldn’t countenance children being kept in a jail cell with their parents but why not on a military base? Or an old warehouse? The administration says they hope to deter illegal entry into the U.S. by threatening families with separation. Anyone with any sense is in favor of deterrence but for God’s sake, isn’t there a better way?

This is an idiotic policy that Democrats are exploiting for all it’s worth. In fact, their hysteria on the issue has begun forcing Republicans to run for cover. It’s too bad for them it didn’t happen in the fall when the impact on the election might have given the GOP a real pasting. As it is, their strategy to highlight the heart-rending, emotional aspects of parentless children being kept in cages crying out for momma is dividing the Republicans, uniting the Democrats, angering Hispanics, disgusting the world, and bewildering almost everyone else.

Trump is trying to compare the situation with the refugee problem that began to hit the EU in 2015. He warned, “The United States will not be a migrant camp and it will not be a refugee holding facility.” Good for him. Now, what about taking kids from their parents?

Trump can blame the Dems, he can rail against illegal alien violent criminals, he can push for a border wall, he can do any number of things his Know Nothing supporters are urging him to do. But he doesn’t have to separate families at the border.
