Father Michael Pfleger, senior pastor at Saint Sabina Church in Chicago and a political activist, called on members of Congress not to let impeachment distract from enacting gun control measures.
“Certainly it can be [a distraction] and it’s up to us to make sure it isn’t. It’s up to the legislators and it’s up to us in the communities to make sure the media doesn’t allow it to be not talked about because while the impeachment process is going on and it should and I’m 100 percent behind it, people are still dying,” Pfleger said after a recent a gun control rally on Capitol Hill.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, and other Democratic lawmakers also addressed the rally. Rapper Common, originally from Chicago, made an appearance as well.
Pfleger said he endorsed Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) in the 2016 Democratic primary and he’s still a supporter.
“I’m a big Bernie supporter, since the last election, I love Bernie,” he said. “Right now I really love Bernie. He’s been consistent with his message but I like others, too, but we’ll see where it goes.”
Pfleger made headlines during the 2008 presidential primary when he said Hillary Clinton believed she had the nomination locked up until Barack Obama came out of nowhere and made her think “there’s a black man stealing my show.” In response, Obama issued a statement condemning Pfleger’s comments and Pfleger apologized for the statements.
On Monday, Pfleger invited President Trump to the South and West Sides of Chicago. Trump will be in Chicago for a fundraiser this month.
