The Morning Briefing: GHWB Funeral Not to Be Anti-Trump Rally and Much, Much More

Good Tuesday morning.

Here is what’s on the president’s agenda today:

  • The president signs S. 140, the “Frank LoBiondo Coast Guard Authorization Act of 2018”

Bush family promises not to criticize Trump at GHWB funeral

I thought this was a headline from The Onion, but it’s from the Washington Post, so make of that what you will: “Bush family seeks to steer clear of anti-Trump sentiment at 41st president’s funeral

Why would it be appropriate to smack talk President Trump at a former president’s funeral? Isn’t that insulting to ex-Prez GHWB? Instead of recognizing his life and accomplishments, his family is going to conduct an open mic night Trump-deranged poetry slam at the National Cathedral? Seriously, people who think it is proper to bash a politician at your loved one’s funeral can go to hell. (The Wellstone funeral broke this ground.)

This all goes without saying among normal humans but:

The Bush family contacted the White House this past summer to say that President Trump would be welcome at the funeral, scheduled Wednesday at Washington National Cathedral, and to assure him that the focus would be on Bush’s life rather than their disagreements, according to one former administration official.

I was not a Bush fan, either one of ’em, but the man was president of the United States, he was a veteran, and he served his country. Hopefully his family and the media harpies can focus on him at his funeral.

Meanwhile, the media was shocked that President Trump showed up to pay respects and didn’t belch, fart and do that thing where you put your hand under your armpit and make those funny noises at the Capitol Rotunda because, well, you know why. Here’s what the Politico posse had to say.

Comey the Redeemer to testify Friday

James Comey, the world’s most holy and honorable man, will testify before the Judiciary Committee on Friday. Comey fought the Committee’s subpoena but eventually agreed to testify if the transcript of his testimony is released within 24 hours.

Comey had resisted the panel’s initial call to testify, arguing that long-running investigations by the GOP-led Judiciary and Oversight committees were really a politically driven effort to discredit the FBI and top officials involved in the probe of President Donald Trump’s campaign contacts with Russia.

Once the Democrats take over the House, you are going to see exactly how important congressional oversight is. I mean, it is so important that there are going to be congressional hearings and subpoenas for days — FOR DAYS! Every day, all day long and it will be righteous, just you wait and see.

And if you are a Comey-head and follow all these jokers and their public political twerking, you can spend your Saturday reading his testimony.

Scenes from the border:

We still have thousands of migrants waiting at the U.S./Mexico border as they asylum shop, but some migrants are sick of waiting.

Central American migrants stuck on the threshold of the United States in Mexico breached the border fence on Monday, risking almost certain detention by U.S. authorities but hoping the illegal entry will allow them to apply for asylum.

These folks need to be ineligible for asylum; there can be no reward for going around law.

So a number opted to eschew legal procedures and attempt an illegal entry from Tijuana as dusk fell on Monday at a spot about 1,500 feet (450 meters) away from the Pacific Ocean.

In less than an hour, Reuters reporters observed roughly two dozen people climb the approximately 10-foot (3-meter) fence made of thick sheets and pillars of metal. They chose a place in a large overgrown ditch where the fence is slightly lower.

Just before dusk, three thin people squeezed through the fence on the beach and were quickly picked up by the U.S. Border Patrol, witnesses said.

And to those who say that these poor migrants just want a better life for their children, 2 migrant children were dropped over border wall.

Two small migrant children appeared to be dropped from the Mexico side of the border into the Arizona side by a suspected smuggler, according to surveillance footage provided by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on Monday.

The children were dropped from the 18-foot wall near the San Luis Port of Entry, according to CBP release. One child suffered a facial injury.

Dropped from an 18-foot wall?!? Good grief.
