GMO Fish OK'd by the FDA

I’m not going near this monstrosity — I won’t even eat farm-raised fish so I’m sure not going to eat franken-fish.

On Thursday, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved genetically modified salmon for human consumption. This is the first animal that has been genetically modified for humans to eat.

ANIMAL.

The Obama administration had stalled in approving the fast-growing salmon for more than five years amid consumer concerns about eating genetically modified foods. But the agency said Thursday the fish is safe to eat.

Is there anyone, anywhere that trusts the federal government to do ANYTHING with a view towards the public’s legitimate safety? NO. WAY. Our government cannot even build a website, the FDA repeatedly retracts “guidelines” for healthy eating, and their computer systems are regularly hacked by China and Russia. No confidence here.

The FDA said that there are “no biologically relevant differences in the nutritional profile of AquAdvantage Salmon compared to that of other farm-raised Atlantic salmon.”

In six months, I would not be surprised if this was totally retracted.

What fresh hell is this:

The fish grows twice as fast as normal salmon, so it reaches market size more quickly. It has an added growth hormone from the Pacific Chinook salmon that allows the fish to produce growth hormone all year long. The engineers were able to keep the hormone active by using another gene from an eel-like fish called an ocean pout that acts like an “on” switch for the hormone. Typical Atlantic salmon produce the growth hormone for only part of the year.

Perhaps this has something to do with the new approval. “The FDA has also said the fish is unlikely to harm the environment. The fish would be bred female and sterile, though a very small percentage might still be able to breed. The company has argued the potential for escape is low.”

Ah, it’s for the environment.

Why on earth would someone eat a fish pumped full of growth hormones? Milk, beef and poultry companies advertise that they do not use growth hormones, it’s of such concern to the public.

No thanks.
