Sarah Silverman Blasts 'Cancel Culture': 'They Fired Me' Over a Blackface Photo

I shed no tears for comedienne and sometimes-actress Sarah Silverman losing work because a photo of her wearing blackface surfaced. In fact, I have to suppress gleeful chortles whenever any leftist is hoisted on their own petard. Those gleeful chortles need to wait for another day because owing to her experience, Silverman has some words of wisdom that may help dismantle the left’s thought police.

During an appearance on Bill Simmons’ podcast last week, Silverman said:

“I recently was going to do a movie, a sweet part. Then, at 11pm the night before, they fired me because they saw a picture of me in blackface from that episode. I didn’t fight it. They hired someone else who is wonderful but who has never stuck their neck out. It was so disheartening. It just made me real, real sad, because I really kind of devoted my life to making it right.”

She went on to discuss what she calls the “cancel culture.” Fleshing out her vivid words, Silverman explained:

“It’s like, if you’re not on board, if you say the wrong thing, if you had a tweet once, everyone is, like, throwing the first stone. It’s so odd. It’s a perversion. It’s really, ‘Look how righteous I am and now I’m going to press refresh all day long to see how many likes I get in my righteousness.'”

Silverman has apologized for using blackface. In no uncertain terms, she had denounced blackface and her use of it. Repentance is not enough for her fellow leftists, though. Punishment in perpetuity is required for thought crimes. Ironically, leftists are finding themselves caught up in the thought police’s dragnet along with conservatives. And none of this is okay.

A few weeks ago, I tweeted in support of Mohammed Elshamy, a blue-checked photo-journalist who found himself in hot water for some stupid and racist things he tweeted when he was 16 years old. For many virtue-signaling leftists, it didn’t matter that Elshamy apologized. His views as a 16-year-old require punishment years later, even though he no longer holds those beliefs.

People should be allowed to grow and change. It’s dangerous to hold people accountable for things they believed or said in the past that they now renounce. In the leftists’ brave new world of thought crimes, none of us are innocent. All of us are under the threat of being doxed, threatened, and fired for something we said when we were a kid, or for things we no longer believe nor support. Hopefully, the more that leftists are caught in their own trap, the more likely it may be that people will come to their senses. Let’s hope that Sarah Silverman’s words of warning are heeded.
