NEA Reaffirms Abortion Support, Saying Trump Wants 'to Abolish the Gains of the Women's Rights Movement'

No matter what you think about unions, we can all agree that labor unions should remain focused on their specific mission. For an absurd example, the NBA Players Association has zero reason to weigh in on fishing rights in the North Atlantic. For another absurd example, the National Education Association (NEA), the largest teachers union in the country, has zero reason to weigh in on the abortion debate. Astonishingly, one of those absurd examples is true. I’ll give you a hint: it’s not the NBA Players Association and fishing rights.

Actually, the NEA passing a resolution condemning attacks on abortion isn’t really astonishing. It is 2019, after all, and leftists are being reduced to having to publicly virtue signal their stance on every single issue that the far left demands loyalty to. Abortion, of course, is one of the issues that the far left fights the hardest to defend. So, while it’s disgusting that the NEA believes it’s within their mission statement to defend abortion, it’s really not that surprising if you think about it.

At their annual meeting held in Houston this year, the NEA passed a series of resolutions. New Business Item 56 has absolutely zero to do with education. The resolution declares:

Furthermore, the NEA will include an assertion of our defense of a person’s right to control their own body, especially for women, youth, and sexually marginalized people. The NEA vigorously opposes all attacks on the right to choose and stands on the fundamental right to abortion under Roe v. Wade.

The rationale for Item 56, the NEA explains, is that “The most misogynistic forces, under Trump, want to abolish the gains of the women’s rights movement.  Women’s leadership is essential for any successful egalitarian movement and therefore must be protected.”

The resolution came about because the NEA wants to honor “the leadership of women, non-binary, and trans people, and other survivors who have come forward to publicly name their rapists and attackers.”

I know several teachers. None of them consider advocating for abortion as leadership. In fact, every public school teacher that I know is adamantly opposed to abortion. What’s more, considering that public opinion is steadily turning anti-abortion and pro-life, it’s safe to assume that a large contingent of America’s teachers are not in agreement with the NEA’s public statement about abortion.

The fact that an organization that exists to represent them has decided to make a very public stance in support of abortion should cause every pro-life teacher that is a member of the NEA to resign from the union. The NEA has proven that far-left causes are far more important to them than the actual career concerns of the teachers they claim to represent.
