Four Arrested in Beating of Trump Voter in Chicago

Four people have been arrested in the racially, politically charged beating of a Trump voter in Chicago that occurred the day following Trump’s election.

The Chicago Tribune reported Friday that Julian Christian, 26, Dejuan Collins, 20, Rajane Lewis, 21, and a 17-year-old girl were each charged with one felony count of vehicular hijacking, according to police.

In light of the fact that the brutal assault was caught on camera, the charges appear to be light.

As reported here at PJ Media, disturbing video footage emerged online showing 49-year-old David Wilcox being beaten and kicked by these thugs as a mob cheered them on. Onlookers were heard saying “he voted for Trump!” “beat his ass!” and “don’t vote Trump!” as Wilcox was being attacked, and as one of the individuals rooted around the driver’s side of his car.

Wilcox later told the Chicago Tribune that the incident began when a black sedan grazed his vehicle. When Wilcox got out to ask for insurance, onlookers taunted him for voting for Trump, which he defended. Said Wilcox:

The African American at the bus stop said, “yeah, that’s one of those white boy Trump supporters.” And I said, “what does that have to do with this accident? I just want to exchange insurance” … The next thing I know, the guy said, “don’t worry about it because we’re going to beat his ass.”

And then punches were thrown. And the next thing I know, I have five people on me, I fell to the ground, I was kicked in the head … They were in my car stealing all my stuff … I tried going to the car, I got hit some more.

No one intervened on his behalf while he was being assaulted. The video shows other cars passing by, and a mob forming around the scene — which taunted him and cheered his attackers.

Wilcox said he tried to get back into his car — but someone else was already in the driver’s seat. As Wilcox tried to get him out of his car, he was dragged away as his now-hijacked car drove off at a high speed. Wilcox said he was dragged for about a mile before the car slowed down enough for him to jump off.

Wilcox was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was treated for his injuries and released, police said.

Last week, the Public Interest Legal Foundation called on the Obama Justice Department to prosecute the mob attack as a voting rights violation. The nonprofit group sent letters to two sections in the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division calling for an investigation into the attack as a violation of Section 11 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Said J. Christian Adams, president of the Public Interest Legal Foundation (Adams is also PJ Media legal editor):

The right to participate in an election without fear of being beaten by a mob is one of the most fundamental civil rights. Americans should not have to fear political violence because they voted for Donald Trump, and this Justice Department needs to start enforcing the law no matter who the victim is. Elections are free only if they are free from violence.
