You know that hesitant laughter a crowd gives a comedian when he says something that might be a little too soon after a tragedy, or might be borderline inappropriate? It’s a sort of gritted-teeth chuckle. That’s what Trump got when he started telling jokes in Puerto Rico.
The president mused, “I hate to tell you, Puerto Rico, but you have thrown our budget a little out of whack because we’ve spent a lot of money on Puerto Rico.” Addressing a territory just weeks after it has been ravaged by two horrific hurricanes, a place where millions of Americans are suffering, Trump really didn’t have the right audience for his shtick.
He also bragged that through his agencies’ work in the region, and with the help of the governor of Puerto Rico, they were able to keep the death toll at sixteen — “16, versus literally thousands of people; you can be very proud.” But, does suffering need a quantification? Did Trump actually do as good of a job as he should have in P.R.?
Chuckle chuckle…?
