Look, Antifa is not a great organization; they are definitely violent. But there is NO MORAL EQUIVALENCY between them and neo-Nazis. None. The Nazis are literally honoring an ideology that killed millions of people. They aren’t just violent at their rallies, they’re murderous and genocidal at their core, and they base it all on skin color, religion, and ethnicity. But President Trump has so much trouble saying that. He has so much trouble simply condemning these horrible people and leaving it there. There always has to be a “but” or an “and.”
After visiting Florida to assess hurricane damage, he spoke with a press gaggle aboard Air Force One. He literally had just gone to visit people who are suffering due to a natural disaster, but he couldn’t be that compassionate consoler for very long. When asked if he had discussed his Charlottesville remarks with Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), the only black Republican in the Senate, President Trump confirmed that he had. But he just used it as a way to claim justification for his earlier heinous statements.
He said, “I think especially in light of the advent of Antifa, if you look at what’s going on there. You have some pretty bad dudes on the other side, also, and essentially that’s what I said. Now, because of what’s happened since then with Antifa, you look at, you know, really, what’s happened since Charlottesville, a lot of people have actually written, ‘Gee, Trump might have a point.’ I said, ‘You have some very bad people on the other side, also,’ which is true.”
In addition to the problems of yet again refusing to call out a genocidal bunch of racists, he used language about Antifa being “the other side.” So, basically, he’s admitting that the neo-Nazis are on his side. “The other side” implies that they are the ones counter to your side. This is certainly as close as he has come to admitting that the racist alt-righters are supporters of his, are in his base. They aren’t the other side to him, Antifa is.
IT IS BEYOND TIME for any true conservative, any true Republican, and really any true American, to condemn Trump’s moral equivalency nonsense. You can say Antifa is bad without drawing equivalence between them and people who want to wipe Jews and minorities off the face of the planet.
And don’t even get me started on the historical statue argument. That simply IS NOT what this is about. As hip millennials are fond of saying, I’m out of f**ks at this point.
