U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions may have been answering the criticisms hurled at his administration (that they are not keeping their promise to show compassion to DACA recipients) by saying, “There is nothing compassionate about the failure to enforce immigration law.” But will this defense work? Sessions also alluded to Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients as perpetrators of “terrorism.” Some might say that this is yet another group that President Trump promised to defend that he is now betraying. He promised to be the first major Republican president to actively defend LGBT citizens, and then rejected the queer communities’ needs in our schools and military. And recently he promised that the DACA Dreamers shouldn’t be worried, even last week saying, “We love the Dreamers.” But now he is set to kick them out. In fact, are there any groups that Trump has made promises to that he will manage to uphold? Is it compassionate to betray people you made promises to?
