Bill Maher Gets It

This week, Trump renamed Lake Ontario "Lake America" in the middle of trade talks with Canada, and I'll admit I don’t think this move is nearly as clever or effective as the Gulf of America renaming. Renaming a Great Lake to needle Canada during a trade dispute isn't exactly a serious act of statecraft. But the meltdown that followed revealed something far more useful than the joke itself: how easily Democrats let themselves get trolled. And boy, liberals took the bait exactly the way they always do, fueling Trump's strategy without realizing it.

Democrats have a nasty habit of getting worked up over everything, whether it's worth the outrage or not. That makes it painfully easy for Trump to get under their skin. He knows it. That's precisely why the strategy keeps working, election cycle after election cycle, gaffe after gaffe, meltdown after meltdown.

And the harshest critic of their latest meltdown wasn't a conservative. Guess who it was? It was leftist comedian Bill Maher.

On Friday's episode of Real Time, he couldn't resist calling out liberals for taking Trump's bait exactly the way they always do, and he had the receipts to prove it.

"Trump is so mad at Canada, he renamed Lake Ontario 'Lake America,'" Maher said on Real Time. "Now I have to buy a new globe again!"

"Liberals are very pissed at this," Maher continued. "They say you can't just go around renaming to suit your political agenda. Just ask any Latinx birthing person."

Maher, to his credit, seems to be the only prominent voice on the left who actually sees it. While his fellow liberals were busy howling about a lake's new name, they conveniently ignored the real story: a trade standoff with a major ally that actually affects American jobs and prices. Attacking Trump personally was easier than engaging with the substance, so they did that instead. None of that fits neatly into a quick dunk on Trump, so it got buried under jokes about globes.

And Maher's "birthing person" line wasn't just a punchline. Liberals did indeed invent "Latinx," a term Latinos don’t even use, because it’s gender neutral or something. And that’s just scratching the surface of the way the left renames things to suit their agenda. They call females "birthing persons" to be trans-inclusive. They call criminals "justice-involved persons" to make them sound less associated with criminal behavior. In recent years, I’ve noticed people on the left replacing “homeless” with “unhoused.” I’m still trying to figure out what that accomplishes.

But some of their linguistic rebranding goes far beyond harmless euphemisms.

For example, they rebrand racial quotas as “diversity” and “equal opportunity.” They call mutilating healthy bodies of children “gender-affirming care.” They call illegal immigrants “undocumented persons.” They call abortion “choice” and “reproductive freedom.”

Notice the pattern here?

By changing the language, the left thinks it can change how people think about policy issues. Euphemisms sanitize policies that would sound far less appealing if described more accurately. The left’s goal is to obscure reality, soften controversial ideas, and make a radical agenda sound reasonable. But, hey, let’s get worked up about a lake.

Seriously, if you think about it, Trump renaming a lake to troll Canada is a stunt with a shelf life of about a week or two. But the left's decades-long project of euphemizing its own agenda into unrecognizable, focus-grouped mush is not. Bill Maher gets it.
