Why Won't Barack Obama Just Go Away?

There are few things in politics that make my blood boil quite like Barack Obama’s smug, self-serving arrogance. This is the man who spent eight years lecturing America about “hope” and “unity” while leaving the country more divided, more cynical, and less respected around the world. Case in point: when Obama took a moment to acknowledge a historic peace deal in the Middle East but somehow managed to avoid mentioning the one person actually responsible for making it happen: President Donald Trump.

“After two years of unimaginable loss and suffering for Israeli families and the people of Gaza, we should all be encouraged and relieved that an end to the conflict is within sight; that those hostages still being held will be reunited with their families; and that vital aid can start reaching those inside Gaza whose lives have been shattered,” he wrote. “More than that, though, it now falls on Israelis and Palestinians, with the support of the U.S. and the entire world community, to begin the hard task of rebuilding Gaza – and to commit to a process that, by recognizing the common humanity and basic rights of both peoples, can achieve a lasting peace.”

What he conspicuously left out was any credit to Trump for his leadership in brokering the deal. He’s not the first one to do this and won’t be the last, but there’s still something really infuriating about it coming from Obama.

Plenty of people on the left love to accuse Trump of violating presidential norms, but Obama is the worst offender. After all, this is the man behind the Russian collusion scandal who spied on Trump's campaign and weaponized the intelligence community against a political opponent. Also, upon leaving the Oval Office, he broke years of tradition where retired presidents wouldn’t criticize their successors and routinely criticized Trump during his first term and ever since.

Even today, he is still unable to put partisan animosity aside, even for a moment, to recognize a genuine achievement in Middle East peace. Obama's refusal to credit Trump reveals everything you need to know about his character and his ongoing role as a divisive force in American politics.

His glaring omission is just the latest example of Obama's relentless partisan posturing since leaving office. CNN's Scott Jennings nailed it when he described Obama as "the most hyper-political and hyper-partisan post-president we've ever had," adding that Obama is still acting this way even on a day as historic as the Gaza ceasefire.

“They're not over the fact that Donald Trump won the national popular vote last year, and they keep warning about the same things that they were warning and fussing about during the campaign, to which the American people then responded to,” Jennings observed. “And I just think Democrats from Obama on down are having a heck of a time understanding where they went wrong and how Donald Trump has captivated a nation. And now the entire world.”

Jennings went further, arguing that the Obama-Biden political era ultimately paved the way for Trump to become one of the strongest presidents in modern American history.

Obama's presidency delivered Trump the first time, Jennings noted, and Biden's presidency made Trump stronger than ever. The net result of that entire political era is a Trump administration achieving what his predecessors could not, from peace deals to economic optimism.

Obama’s refusal to give Trump any credit for the Middle East peace deal is vintage Obama: petty, self-serving, and dripping with hypocrisy. This is the same guy who spent eight years preaching “hope and change” while dividing Americans, abusing the power of government to go after political opponents, and leaving the world in chaos. Trump had to come in and clean up the mess Obama left behind: fixing the economy, rebuilding our standing on the world stage, and delivering real progress in the Middle East that Obama never could.

Yet even now, years out of office, Obama just can’t let go. He has to insert himself into the story, as if his opinion still matters, carefully avoiding any mention of the man who actually got the job done. It’s pure ego. Obama can’t stand that Trump succeeded where he failed on peace, prosperity, and leadership. He just needs to go away.
