I haven’t been to New York City in years. I’ve only actually been there a handful of times and typically enjoyed it. But in recent years, you couldn’t pay me to go, and now, after the city’s voters handed its Democratic mayoral nomination to a socialist, I can tell you it’ll be a long time before I go back — if at all.
Zohran Mamdani's victory over Andrew Cuomo in Tuesday's Democratic primary represents everything wrong with today's Democratic Party. This isn't your grandfather's liberalism; this is full-blown socialism. Who thinks government-run grocery stores are the answer to high prices?
As bad as Cuomo would have been, he was the lesser of two evils. What Mamdani is pushing isn’t just a step further left; it’s a headlong dive into hardline socialist extremism. His platform reads like something straight out of a DSA strategy session, and the worst part? He’s not even trying to hide it.
Mamdani has openly called for abolishing the NYPD and dismantling the prison system. He wants to eliminate private health insurance and medical bills entirely, handing the government full control over healthcare. He supports banning all guns, legalizing prostitution, and opening so-called “safe” injection sites across the city. Add to that his plans to end cash bail, decriminalize drug possession, scrap sentencing enhancements, and cut off all cooperation with ICE, and you’ve got a blueprint for total lawlessness.

But Mamdani’s extremism doesn’t stop with policy. His political director publicly praised Luigi Mangione. Mamdani himself is a rabid antisemitic supporter of Hamas and has pledged to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu if he ever visits New York. Economically, it’s more of the same fantasy-world socialism: city-run grocery stores, rent freezes, and the claim that “capitalism is theft.”
If that doesn't make you want to avoid the Big Apple like the plague, you haven't been paying attention to what happens when radical leftists get their hands on city hall.
The Democratic establishment threw tens of millions behind Cuomo's comeback attempt, but it wasn't enough to stop the socialist tsunami. This wasn't just a rejection of Cuomo; it was a complete repudiation of “moderate” Democrats in favor of the radical chic that now defines the party.
The middle class will bear the brunt of Mamdani's inevitable victory in November. The wealthy will simply relocate or insulate themselves with their privilege and resources. The poor will be pacified with subsidies and government handouts. But working families — the backbone of any functional city — will watch their neighborhoods deteriorate while being lectured about their moral inferiority by a mayor who thinks capitalism is theft.
And they’ll probably continue to vote for the guy.
New York City is about to become a real-time experiment in socialist governance, and the results will be predictably disastrous. The only question is how long it will take for reality to set in and how much damage will be done in the meantime. Until then, I'll be staying far away from the city that never sleeps because under Mamdani's leadership, it might never wake up either.
