Why Do Liberal Narratives Only Die When They're No Longer Useful?

Townhall Media

We’ve heard all kinds of malarkey from the Democrats in recent years. From whoppers like “Trump colluded with Russia to steal the 2016 election,” “The 2020 election was the most secure election in history,” “Joe Biden is mentally fit to be president,” “The Hunter Biden laptop was Russian disinformation,” or “The economy under Biden was awesome.”

None of these things were true, of course. But, the media never admits such things in a timely manner — if they do at all. The media did finally admit one of these things wasn’t true when Politico conceded this week that the Biden economy really did suck, and it wasn’t a right-wing conspiracy to say otherwise.

Great timing, right?

It’s one thing when the media tells us not to trust our lying eyes, but this admission speaks to a much bigger problem. When the Biden administration and the Democrats touted the state of the economy as “the best economy in a generation,” they were leaning heavily on government statistics to back these claims and essentially declared Americans who didn’t agree with them to be wrong if not outright stupid. We weren’t, of course.

No amount of rhetoric can convince someone that the economy is great when their paychecks aren’t covering the cost of everyday necessities like they used to. However, government reports from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) boasted full employment and a declining rate of inflation, and we simply weren’t supposed to believe our lying eyes.

In fact, whether it was Joe Biden or Kamala Harris, the message was clear, Americans just were too stupid to see just how great the economy was. Biden regularly cited bogus job numbers that were debunked by virtually every fact-checker there is.

Today, Politico concedes that unemployment was higher, wages were lower, and growth wasn’t nearly what government statistics were claiming. While it’s good that this is finally being acknowledged, it’s always the timing of these concessions that gets me.

The Russian collusion narrative overshadowed much of Trump’s first term, and many on the left still believe it, even after countless investigations, including the Mueller investigation, confirmed it was bogus. It wasn’t until after Biden took office that the media admitted that the Hunter Biden laptop was real. It wasn’t until after Biden dropped out that many in the media finally started admitting that Biden wasn’t all there during his presidency, and many waited until after the election or even after Trump took office to finally admit it.

Now that Trump has taken office, we’re finally seeing acknowledgment that the economy he’s inherited is even worse than what many thought. That’s convenient, isn’t it? Was this blatant election interference? I wouldn’t discount the possibility, but I can't help but notice how false liberal narratives only die after they matter less. Whether it's the Hunter Biden laptop story or the truth about the economy, these liberal narratives only have to last through an election before they're allowed to fall apart.
