I’m So Glad I Have a Gas Stove Right Now

As I write this, my home is without power. We’ve been without power since roughly 11:30 a.m. ET and the last I heard, we may have power back late tonight. But for now, it’s the dark ages. Thankfully, I can use my iPad to write this and use my iPhone as a hotspot to post it.

Yes, we have heat. Thankfully, our primary heat source in the house is natural gas. I have no doubt we’ll get through this outage and eventually laugh about the temporary inconvenience that it caused.

Thanks to the supply chain crisis a couple of years ago, I made sure that we were prepared to handle such scenarios. We’re well stocked with various types of batteries, flashlights, and even a long-term supply of shelf-stable food. So yeah, we’re good.

Luckily, we are also able to have hot food. Our oven — which is electric — may not be working, but we do have a gas stove. And boy, am I glad we do.

And this whole experience has been a reminder that my gas stove, the one that will allow us to have a hot meal tonight, is the same kind of stove that the Biden administration wants to ban.

I can still remember being shocked last year when we heard the Biden administration was considering a national ban on gas stoves. It wasn’t just because of some absurd climate change reason either. According to Democrats, they are also racist.

Seriously, that’s what Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.) said in a letter to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, claiming that gas stove emissions are a “cumulative burden” on black, Latino, and low-income households, which, they claim, disproportionately experience air pollution.

Never mind the fact that 40% of Americans have gas stoves in their home, including lots and lots of white people and lots of Democrats of all races. Trust me, anyone who has a gas stove in their house loves it, and I'm sure we all don’t care that the Environmental Protection Agency and the World Health Organization say they emit dangerous levels of nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, and fine particulate matter.

Of course, what makes this claim so bizarre is that, in the past, natural gas was actually promoted as a cleaner energy source than alternative fuel sources. In fact, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, natural gas “has many qualities that make it an efficient, relatively clean burning, and economical energy source.”

Was this really about climate change and racism or just another scam to push electric on people? They’ve been trying to push electric cars on us, so why not electric stoves? An electric stove won’t provide my family with a hot meal tonight. Our gas stove will.

Spare me the lecture about what makes gas stoves so evil, because if a gas stove is okay for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.), and the Obamas to use, then it’s okay for me, too.

Well, in order to preserve the power of my devices, I must bring this column to a close. And when I have my hot meal tonight, it won't be lost on me that if the Biden administration gets its way, Americans won't be able to have the option.

Tomorrow, I'll be looking into getting a generator for my house.
