Rick Moranis had one of the most storied careers of any comedic actor in Hollywood, starring alongside titans like Steve Martin and Bill Murray, and working under directors like Mel Brooks and Ivan Reitman. He’s remembered for films like Ghostbusters, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Spaceballs, and Little Shop of Horrors.

At some point toward the end of the last century, all that came to an abrupt and unceremonial end. Moranis seemed to drop off the face of the earth. In truth, he retreated from public life after the death of his wife in 1997, becoming a stay-at-home dad to his two young children.

Now that his kids are grown, Moranis considers a return to film. But there’s at least one offer he’s already turned down. From The Hollywood Reporter:

“I wish them well,” says the 62-year-old comedic legend, who’s so stunned by the outcry over his absence in the [new Ghostbusters] film that he decided to grant a rare interview with THR. “I hope it’s terrific. But it just makes no sense to me. Why would I do just one day of shooting on something I did 30 years ago?”

In the interview, Moranis offers significant insight into his career and his time away from the limelight. One unspoken reason why a cameo may not be his best vehicle for returning to film is that long hiatus. His fellow Ghostbusters cast members have remained active and appeared elsewhere. He has not. So perhaps it’s best if his return to film occur in a more significant role.
