Republicans and other fans of comedy rejoiced last week when Alec Baldwin declared he was done playing Donald Trump on SNL. There’s plenty of humor to be mined from the Trump presidency, but you won’t find it on that show. Baldwin’s Trump impression was shoddy to begin with, and over the years it’s only gotten worse. Last week, he finally realized it. I greeted Baldwin’s rare moment of lucid self-awareness with a pleasant smile and a sense of exhausted relief. Our long national nightmare was finally over.
But just like everything else related to Trump, I was wrong on this one. Alec Baldwin lied to me. He lied to all of us.
After declaring himself “so done” with playing Saturday Night Live‘s Donald Trump, Alec Baldwin is leaving open the possibility of extending his ersatz presidency…
“I get sick of [appearing as Trump] and I’ve whined about it regularly, because in the zeitgeist I’m a pretty political person and where I would normally put that energy is in voter registration, to work with MoveOn.org, to get involved in an actual candidacy and get more into that,” he went on to explain. “But Lorne is my dear friend and [SNL] is like another home to me, so if they want me to do it, I probably will.”
That’s bad news for Darrell Hammond, Anthony Atamanuik, and the other 7.5 billion people on the planet who can do a better Trump impression than Alec Baldwin.
But now who’s going to register voters, and work with MoveOn.org, and get involved in an actual candidacy? Who’s going to pick up Baldwin’s slack? If they can’t have him, I guess they’ll just have to settle for second-best.
Trump looks more like William Howard Taft every day. He too, only served one term. #VoteBlue2020 pic.twitter.com/elas5KV6qH
