Congratulations on finding this article if you used Google. A civil rights lawsuit filed this week revealed its search engine blacklists authors and ideas distasteful to the company.
Google engineer James Damore’s class action complaint describes a creepy cult-like orthodoxy at Google, where dissent is smashed, and the color of your skin is far more important than the content of your character. Reading the complaint is a deep dive into wicked, racial groupthink, and a frightening reminder that it really can happen here. At Google, it does.
I met James Damore at a conference last November after he received an award for speaking out against Google’s race obsession and cultish orthodoxy. The poor fellow seemed bewildered, still stuck in those good old-fashioned American notions of free speech, tolerance, and color-blindness toward other people. Damore didn’t seem to understand the Left has big plans for America. His experience at Google should make clear to every American that this gang is playing for keeps.
This article cannot possibly capture all of the rancid, racialist, thuggish things going on at Google, so I’d urge you to take time to read the whole complaint. It’s like reading Solzhenitsyn’s travel log from Ekibastuze. It reveals nothing short of the psychologies of totalitarianism in their timeless forms. The purges. The moral relativism. The threats. The lists of enemies. The upside-down world of the wicked justifying their wickedness.
To be sure, Google doesn’t have the Google Gulag, but the thinking that is normal inside a powerful institution like Google should alarm all actual, normal Americans.
Damore’s worst sin at Google was to be white and male and to presume that shouldn’t matter. In this, Damore was up against the roaring prevailing winds from the Left, where “whiteness” is wickedness, where “maleness” is a construct, and where the bright young things at the tech giant are remaking the world in their own image.
Just like Jim Crow of yesteryear, Google “formed opinions about and then treated Plaintiffs not based on their individual merits, but rather memberships in groups with assumed characteristics,” the complaint reads.
The complaint alleges that Google hires on the basis of race and sex, and punishes (and even fires) employees if they articulate political views that are not Leftist views. Worse, the complaint says that Google created company sanctioned blacklists, harassment committees, and even encouraged open vocal attacks on white males at company events.
Damore’s gravest thoughtcrime was writing and posting an internal memo suggesting that Google reassess the company policy of hiring on the basis of race and sex in order to reduce the role of white males. He posted his memo on an internal discussion group, and urged managers of Google “diversity” programs — such as the aptly named “Code of Conduct Team” — to consider his ideas.
Predictably, the Code of Conduct Team referred Damore to human resources for discipline.
Google finally made Damore an unperson in August 2017, firing him. Before his firing, Damore attended Google diversity training. One session, called “Bias Busting,” was run by a unit at Google called the “Unbiasing Group,” and it focused entirely on agitprop about “white male privilege.”
Damore’s complaint is silent about whether the Unbiasing Group wore uniforms or attached any electrodes to participants.
After Damore posted his memo urging that employees stop being hired and promoted on the basis of race and immutable characteristics, the real onslaught began. Managers attacked him on the discussion boards. Other managers encouraged threats of violence against Damore. Alex Hidalgo, a Google “Site Reliability Engineer,” emailed Damore from [email protected]: “you’re a misogynist and terrible person. I will keep hounding you until one of us is fired. Fuck you.”
Other employees demanded that not only Damore be fired, but anyone who thought like him. Alon Altman, another Google thought policeman, posted — without any hint of irony — that firing anyone sympathetic to Damore “will send a message that we have zero tolerance for intolerance.”
Altman missed his true calling by about 84 years.
After Damore was fired, the “Google Recognition Team” allowed for financial bonuses for any employees who attacked Damore’s views publicly. This is the 2017 version of “Party Membership.”
Things got doubleplusgood for Google employee Simone Wu. She won a Peer Bonus for attacking Damore, and — according to a company-wide email — “doing a fantastic job speaking up for googley values and promoting D&I [diversity and inclusion] in the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is g/pc-harmful-discuss. I hope that her example serves as an inspiration to others who can share the burden.”
“g/pc-harmful-discuss” is the 2017 Google term for oldthink.
Google manager Kim Burchett drafted a Google document called “Derailing.” It provided guidelines on how Google employees could silence opinions with which they disagreed.
The complaint doesn’t just make allegations. It also includes crazy screenshots — lots of them.
Employee Colm Buckley says “there are certain alternative views I do not want people to feel safe to share here.” He characterizes Damore’s views as believing “women or minorities are unqualified,” something Damore never said and does not believe, proving again that justification for thuggery is often built on a lie.
A transsexual Google employee named Tim Chevalier attacked Google employees who suggested genuine tolerance by saying Vice President Mike Pence “put a woman in jail for having a miscarriage. His policies include women being forced to hold funerals for their miscarriages.”
The complaint goes on and on. Google maintains secret blacklists of conservative authors and news sites. Google sought to stifle conservative parenting styles, and made anyone using traditional parenting techniques unwelcome. Instead, Google promoted policies to reward other lifestyles, including “furries, polygamy, transgenderism and plurality.”
Google employee Kim Burchett volunteered to manage a purge.
She considered developing a company list of “people who make diversity difficult. … I personally will be the judge of what is included and excluded. … Things I am pondering: should inclusion on the list require something resembling a trial?”
Google employee Liz Fong-Jones (Twitter: @lizthegrey) rolled out the most ancient of justifications for racism: it benefits everyone else not of the discriminated against race. She felt racism towards whites was goodthink: “If there is any harm to the interests of white men from that work, it is more than made up for by the benefits to everyone as a whole.”
In 1935, Sinclair Lewis wrote It Can’t Happen Here. The title itself was a sharp critique of those who think it can’t happen here. Since 1935, Lewis’s book has been attached to various political figures by the Left — George Bush, Richard Nixon, and most recently President Trump.
It’s nice and easy to attach the book’s message to a particular politician. But the cautionary tale might be better directed at ideas and the psychology of totalitarianism. Today, that totalitarian psychology seems to dominate the corporate culture at one of the most powerful gatekeepers to American political thought. Thought trials, threats, orthodoxy, shunning, racialism, moral relativism, enforcement committees, and cult-like hunts for thoughtcrime reveal Google as an echo chamber that aims to control the thinking of the world.
