Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.), the junior senator who formerly served as president of the Club for Growth, will be serving a second term after surviving a tough re-election challenge.
With 99 percent of returns in, Toomey led Democrat Katie McGinty, a former environmental policy advisor in President Clinton’s administration and as Department of Environmental Protection secretary under Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, by 49-47 percent.
Because McGinty was running in a high-profile swing state, she received campaign help from big-name Dems who rallied in Pennsylvania for Hillary Clinton, including President Obama on Monday night.
McGinty’s campaign criticized Toomey, who did not reveal whether or not he supported Donald Trump for president, for not casting his ballot until 6:45pm.
“Toomey is intentionally waiting until millions of his constituents have already voted today before making clear to them who he supports to be our next commander in chief,” McGinty campaign spokesman Josh Levitt said in a statement today. “That is spineless and the exact opposite of leadership — but not a surprise from Pat Toomey. “All year, Pat Toomey has dodged and ducked questions on Donald Trump’s offensive candidacy, refusing to stand up to Donald Trump or be honest with his constituents solely in hopes of protecting his political future. In the process, Pat Toomey made himself a national laughingstock.”
Toomey visited polling stations during the day, according to photos posted on his Twitter account.
In the closing days of the campaign, the senator campaigned on rising Obamacare premiums and veterans’ rights.
