Reading is Fundamental

“George Zimmerman Witness Can’t Read Letter She ‘Wrote’ About Shooting,” reports those crazed blood-thirsty jingoistic right-wing crazies…at ABC, the House of Stephanopoulos. (Auto-play video at link, unfortunately):

A teenage friend of Trayvon Martin was forced to admit today in the George Zimmerman murder trial that she did not write a letter that was sent to Martin’s mother describing what she allegedly heard on a phone call with Martin moments before he was shot.

In a painfully embarrassing moment, Rachel Jeantel was asked to read the letter out loud in court.

“Are you able to read that at all?” defense attorney Don West asked.

Jeantel, head bowed, eyes averted whispered into the court microphone, “Some but not all. I don’t read cursive.”

It sent a hush through the packed courtroom.

Plus this:

It’s pretty hard to top “That’s real retarded, sir,” but 19-year-old Rachel Jeantel, friend of Trayvon Martin and “star witness” for the Zimmerman trial prosecution, is giving it the old college try.

She made waves yesterday when she testified that Martin had called Zimmerman a “creepy-ass cracker.”

But hey, nothing wrong with that, because (another auto-play video at link):

Jeantel, who exchanged hundreds of calls and text messages with Trayvon during their friendship, said he called her as he was walking back from 7-Eleven on the night of the Feb. 26, 2012 killing. During their conversation Trayvon said a “creepy a– cracker” man was staring at him and wanted to get away, Jeantel said. Thursday, Jantel says the reference to cracker referred to “a pervert.”

Define “pervert,” please, Ms. Jeantel. Particularly since the above quoted article was written yesterday, the same day the Supreme Court effectively legalized gay marriage in California and other states.

But don’t worry, Jeantel is still a totally credible witness. As long as you pay no attention to the nearly 60 tweets Jeantel deleted this week, according to The Smoking Gun:

As TSG reported yesterday, Jeantel, pictured above, maintains a Twitter account (@MsRachel_94) to which she has made more than 200 posts over the past five months. Many of the teenager’s tweets referred to drinking, smoking, and getting high. She also made references to Martin’s death, referred to acquaintances as “bitch” and “nigga,” and wrote about having “jackass lawyers on my ass.”

Yesterday afternoon, after TSG sought to contact several of Jeantel’s Twitter followers and Facebook friends, 14 tweets–and 13 linked Twitpic photos–were deleted from her Twitter account (which carries the personal motto “My Character And Action Describe Who I Am”). The removed tweets included references to drinking and a link to a sexually suggestive set of photos. Another killed tweet, from June 23, read “Court nails” and linked to a photo of fingernails (presumably Jeantel’s) with fresh orange polish. Additionally, several Twitpic images of assorted liquor bottles were deleted.

The scrubbing of Jeantel’s Twitter account, however, did not end there.

After 10 PM (Eastern) last night, 43 other tweets were deleted. The postings disappeared about two hours after TSG published a story about Jeantel’s social media musings. A TSG comparison of Jeantel’s sanitized Twitter account with the version from early Tuesday afternoon showed that the number of published tweets plummeted from 202 to 146.

A compilation of the 43 deleted Jeantel tweets can be found on pages beginning here. The 14 tweets deleted yesterday afternoon can be found here.

As the Professor notes, “Obama and the Democrats would actually prefer an acquittal here:”

That’s because the whole point of the ginned-up Zimmerman affair was to inflame racial sentiment to boost black turnout in 2012. With any luck, they can turn an acquittal into another racial rallying cry, which will help in 2014. It’s not about Zimmerman; he’s just one of those eggs you have to break to make an Obama omelet.

UPDATE: Reader Bill Lux writes: “If their goal is prepping the battlefield then they might get their wish. The mainstream coverage of the trial is so abysmal that I don’t think casual observers realize what a farce this is and how weak the State’s case is (Andrew Branca’s tweeting has been indispensable). If there’s an acquittal, many people will be outraged because they’re so ill-informed.” That’s not by accident.

Can the left really generate two election years’ worth of battlefield prep from the Zimmerman case? We’ll see.

Update: And here we go: “The bloodthirsty Twitter lynch mob is at it again. If George Zimmerman isn’t found guilty of murdering Trayvon Martin, many suggest they’re willing to take matters into their own hands. Here’s a sample of tweeted death threats from just the past 24 hours.”

Maybe VDH is right — we really are living in the 21st century equivalent of Rome, 200 AD.
