“There’s a reason reporters who cover the White House say that top aides and even the president are deeply unsettled,” Peter Wehner of Commentary wrote yesterday, in a post titled “Obama Disassociates from Reality.” Wehner added, “It’s not just that what he considers his legacy achievement looks to be imploding before our eyes, which would be bad enough. There’s something else going on as well:”
The Affordable Care Act or close approximations of it is something liberals have worked toward for generations. It has been, for the left, a kind of talisman; to have had it codified in law ranks as one of the great liberal achievements in American history. Or so the left though. They probably should have been more careful in what they asked for. As Ryan Lizza of the New Yorker put it, “The ACA is the most important liberal project in decades. If it fails, it is a complete disaster for liberalism.”
Correct. And if you go to the scorecard, you’ll see that the ACA is failing. That the great and mighty Obama seems powerless to stop it. And that ObamaCare may become an ever more complete disaster for liberalism than it is now. Which is saying something.
Perhaps that explains why the Left is not having a fun week, judging by the sharp upturn in racially-themed headlines appearing this week from what Reason’s Jesse Walker would call the Paranoid Center of Power:
● CNBC’s Steve Liesman: Can We Get ‘Mexican Music’ for Ted Cruz?
(Curiously, NBC hasn’t dubbed Cruz a “white Hispanic” or “Peruvian-American” as they did with George Zimmerman. And as John Nolte recently noted at Big Journalism, “After Weeks of Hate Speech from Media & Obama, Cruz Receives Death Threat.”)
● As Matt Drudge notes, “ONION Under Fire For Calling REDSKINS Owner ‘Kike’…”
● Atlanta Journal & Constitution tweets and (later deletes), “$1M GA Lottery winner Willie Lynch can get 40 acres and a whole lotta mules.”
● NBC, Time-Warner-CNN-HBO alumnus and CBS star Chris Noth deletes recent tweets declaring that “Every Tea Party member should be horsewhipped,” and “Highest level of racism was showed yesterday when Republicans forced a shutdown of our government. Mostly because our President is black.”
● Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL) fundraises with headline “The Tea Party: No More Popular Than the Klan,” and underneath the words, “Tea Party” spelled out with a burning cross and Klansman.” Former Florida Congressman and Tea Party favorite Allen West is not amused. And I’m wondering why Grayson hates his fellow Democrats, President Woodrow Wilson and Democratic National Committee member Bull Connor.
● Joan Walsh, editor at large of Salon, whose recent book asks, “What’s the Matter with White People?”, err, such as herself, is angry with the Washington Post’s young Ezra Klein for publicly admitting ObamaCare’s flaws. It was on Klein’s JournoList in 2008, Spencer Ackerman, New Republic and Wired alumnus, now with the London Guardian famously wrote, “If the right forces us all to either defend [Obama mentor Rev.] Wright or tear him down, no matter what we choose, we lose the game they’ve put upon us. Instead, take one of them — Fred Barnes, Karl Rove, who cares — and call them racists.”
Unnerved over the painful rollout of ObamaCare, the left has fired up the Krell Machine to unleash a particularly large number of Monsters from the Id at their fellow countrymen. Not to mention giving us a sneak preview of how ugly next year will be, leading up to the midterm elections. As Sgt. Phil Esterhaus liked to say on Hill Street Blues, “Let’s be careful out there” — but let’s keep our video cameras and TiVos fired up as well, as there will be plenty additional examples of leftists gone wild to document between now and November of 2014.
(Headline inspired by yesterday’s post from Glenn Reynolds, who noted that “Jay Carney walks out on a black female reporter who’s asking a polite question about the Obamacare website.”)
Update: Walsh tacitly calls Jay Carney a liar:
[Sen. Dick] Durbin [D-IL] said in an October 20 Facebook post, “In a ‘negotiation’ meeting with the president, one GOP House Leader told the president: ‘I cannot even stand to look at you.’”
That’s a pretty serious charge. Say what you want about Obama but congressional leaders should be professional and respectful of the office of the president. Naturally, all the GOP leaders who were there denied it but of course they would, right?
How bad is this lie? This bad.
White House press secretary Jay Carney on Wednesday flatly denied that a House Republican told President Obama “I cannot even stand to look at you” during negotiations over the government shutdown. “It did not happen,” Carney said, saying he discussed the incident with a “participant in the meeting.”
Stand with Durbin!
Run with that, Joan — just don’t run with scissors.
