Kanye West says he is committed to bringing the gospel to those who need it most and he showed up at two Texas prisons in Harris County, Texas, over the weekend to bring the gospel to inmates.

After praying and worshipping with the men in the San Jacinto building, he took his choir through an underground tunnel to bring Sunday Service to the women in the Baker Street jail. The responses of the prisoners are heartwarming to see. This type of prison ministry is a needed area for Christian outreach. West’s heart for imprisoned people is well known, with his, and his wife’s, interest in lobbying for people who have been given overly-harsh sentencing for non-violent crimes.

While West has faced skepticism about his conversion from many corners of Christianity, he doesn’t seem to care and is pressing on, doing what he does for the neediest around us. I think we can all agree, no matter our denomination, that bringing the word of God and the hope of Jesus Christ to these inmates who are surrounded by so much negativity and darkness is nothing but wonderful.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Department was very supportive of this event and made great videos so the public could share in it. West said he went to the prisons because he wanted the inmates to know that “Jesus can set you free!”

West made this surprise visit before his scheduled appearance with Joel Osteen. You can see the event with Osteen here. I haven’t watched the whole thing yet, but I’m pretty sure the name of Jesus was spoken more times that day than in Lakewood’s entire existence. During the interview, West admitted to his former arrogance and gave all the credit for his success to God alone. These are transformative words for a man like West, who had called himself a god in the past.
Perhaps one of the biggest miracles God worked on this trip was getting Kim Kardashian properly dressed for church. West has been public about the arguments he has had with his wife recently about modesty and Kim has said she can be flexible. Her choice of wardrobe on this trip confirms that she meant it. West opened up about his porn addiction in recent interviews and his realization that porn is harming people and relationships. He has also taken all of the televisions out of his children’s rooms and is monitoring much more closely what they are watching and how they dress. Kardashian told reporters, “North is trying to get in on the makeup, but she’s being blocked heavily because her dad has stopped all makeup for her until she’s a teenager.” West has been vocal about how his views have changed on modesty and guarding his children from this garbage culture.

Kanye got to share a powerful message with Osteen’s congregation about addiction and breaking free from demons that oppress God’s people. “You have to say the name, Jesus,” he said. His message could be summed up in one powerful sentence, “Reinstate the fear and love of God, and eliminate the fear and love of everything else.”

While he has let go of a lot of his arrogance, he has retained the confidence many love about him, but he now credits God for it. West believes God called him to take back the music industry for the Lord. “The greatest artist God ever created is now working for Him,” he said to cheers. “We are taking the best producers and bringing them back to God.” Christian creativity is nearly non-existent. Christian art barely exists. If Kanye West can bring back a Christian renaissance, it will be the most exciting and fun thing to watch in generations.
