A horrifying new murder case out of Minnesota highlights the serious issue that America stopped requiring immigrants to be patriotic, which means that many people — particularly Muslim men — come to the U.S. for the freebies and the standard of living, but hate freedom, equality, and our Judeo-Christian civilization all the same.
When my ancestors came to America from Portugal, Russia, Ireland, England, and Bavaria, they joined the military or took jobs and became responsible, fervently patriotic citizens. What a contrast with most immigrants, especially illegal immigrants, today.
To give an example of the gratitude crisis among modern immigrants, who come to America already prejudiced against our values and then receive Democrat propaganda vilifying America, consider this story: Tsegaab Binessu murdered Nansi Fuentes Zambrano, Dena Silcox, and Adam Wilwerding. His alleged motive?
[New York Post] Binessu, originally from Ethiopia, wanted to cancel his $65-a-month parking garage contract as he had aspirations to join the Navy … He called staffers regarding the cancellation process, but they said he couldn’t opt out after just renewing his contract.
Binessu then told the workers he was going to go down to the leasing office – before launching his alleged rampage.
Binessu shot two of the victims half a dozen times each and told police he “hated the American system.” So he was living in America and wanted to join our military, but hated the “American system” and butchered three people over a parking contract that wasn't canceled. He even played the race card and claimed he was a victim. The truly chilling part is that Binessu is not an exception. Every day there are stories of illegal aliens, or individuals who obtained legal resident status too easily, committing crimes.

Obviously, there has never been a time when America could guarantee that every immigrant coming here really shared our values. But it is true that in the 19th and early 20th centuries, our immigration system was set up to limit the number of people who could come into the U.S. so they could be assimilated. Furthermore, if you look at the questions Ellis Island authorities would pose to migrants, they included asking whether the immigrants already had family in America and whether they were capable of financially supporting themselves. There were also questions about whether the immigrants supported anarchy, knew which president had freed the slaves, understood what the Constitution was, knew why July 4 was significant, could state the national anthem’s title, and remembered who the first and current American presidents were.
In short, there was a belief that not only should immigrants be capable of sustaining themselves and contributing economically to their new country, but that these immigrants should also have some basic understanding of America’s founding documents, heroes, and ideals. This could not be more different from the government attitude toward immigrants today.
Now both state and federal officials overwhelmingly treat immigrants, especially the illegal, as if they automatically have a right to live here and receive all kinds of taxpayer-funded assistance. No longer do we demand that immigrants understand the rudiments of America’s governmental system, heroes, and founding ideals. No longer do we require proof that they can sustain themselves and give back economically to America. Democrats raise a screech if even the worst criminals among immigrants receive anything less than endless money, housing, healthcare, and forgiveness for crimes. Even most Republicans throw common sense out the window when presented with illegal alien minors or aliens who have lived here for decades. Instead of expecting immigrants to benefit America, we expect that they will do all the receiving, and we will do all the giving.
There are certainly exceptions among today’s legal immigrants who really are coming to America because they love freedom. But officials have not designed the system to favor such people. It is no wonder that immigration has become such a plague upon our country. Democrats even deliberately tried to import people with antithetical values such as Muslims. Instead of welcoming Nigerian Christians or pro-freedom Persian refugees, they welcome “Palestinian” jihadis and Ethiopian murderers. Once those individuals are in America, Democrats teach them that our nation is evil and is oppressing them. Binessu learned his woke propaganda lesson all too well.
