There are a lot of weird things that people say on TV as big stories take place over several days, and the story of the sexual assault accusation made against SCOTUS nominee Brett Kavanaugh is no exception. But the strangest claim — and the most obviously wrong — is one made today on CNN’s “The Lead” (video below).
The panel for today included former Trump campaign strategist David Urban, former Obama communications director Jen Psaki, CNN political correspondent Sara Murray, and columnist and commentator Kirsten Powers, with Erica Hill filling in for Jake Tapper as host.
There was a lot of back-and-forth in the multi-segment discussion, but particularly notable was the debate about the motives for having a hearing and asking — scratch that, agreeing to Christine Blasey Ford’s earlier request — for Ford to testify at that hearing.
Of the two remarkable comments made in the discussion, the most oddly absurd was that of host Hill, who surprisingly asserted that Democrats have been “fairly silent” on the issue of Kavanaugh and the accusation.
Watch:
Really? I guess if you don’t count Michael Moore, Hillary Clinton, Rachel Maddow, or Joe Biden? Maybe. Maybe she just meant elected Democrats though. Right? If so, then she might have a point…
… if you don’t count Sen. Chuck Schumer, Sen. Tammy Duckworth, Sen. Patty Murray, Sen. Doug Jones, Sen. Maria Cantwell, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, Sen. Martin Heinrich, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, Sen. Ed Markey, Sen. Mark Warner… wait maybe she just meant Democrats on the Judiciary Committee? THEN surely she has a point…
…you know, if you don’t count Sen. Dianne Feinstein, Sen. Patrick Leahy, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, Sen. Dick Durbin, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Sen. Kamala Harris, Sen. Richard Blumenthal, Sen. Corey Booker, or Sen. Mazie Hirono.
Oh, also the entire Senate’s worth of Democrats: @SenateDems.
By the way, speaking of Hirono, here’s one thing she said in her fair silence.
Sen. @MazieHirono condemns the "callousness with which" Christine Blasey Ford was treated "by (Hirono's) colleagues" in the legislature after the professor came forward with allegations of sexual assault against SCOTUS nominee Brett Kavanaugh. pic.twitter.com/TMGJQfjftH

Gosh, if only this Democrat on the judiciary committee would speak up, right?
I could go on and on. The Democrats are using this terrible situation to the hilt for political gain, demanding investigations and hearings (both of which they’ve already had) and insisting on one delay after another. Let’s not forget that during the actual hearings they were attempting to delay by complaining about documents, by inviting loudmouth protesters to come hang out and shout, and by simply attempting to derail the process by ignoring all procedures and rules.
The idea that anyone is not being political about it is just crazy. Even if they were “fairly silent,” which they aren’t, it would be part of that political maneuvering.
But what’s even more amazing than the transparently silly assessment by Erica Hill is the absolutely wretched commentary with which Jen Psaki followed up. Hill’s comment was the perfect point upon which to build Psaki’s attack… a coincidence I’m sure.
Well I think what the Democrats are doing, which should tell the American people everything they need to know about the difference between the parties, is trying to be respectful of the wishes of the victim of sexual assault in this case, and they are not trying to make this an absurd circus, which is what the other side is trying to do.
Remember when Brit Hume was dragged across the coals by every media outlet for suggesting Democrats “hate” the country? I can still feel the haughty “well I never” gasps from the CNN and MSNBC talking heads to this day. But this sort of generalization is made routinely about Republicans on those networks, to nary a blinked eye from the same heads. Today was no exception. Psaki essentially argued that Republicans love rape and hate victims, and Democrats are just trying to protect the world from such monsters, with no other motive in their pure, unblemished hearts, on behalf of the victim.
(By the way, if a Republican left out the word “alleged” in a rant like that about a Democrat, you better believe the CNN anchor or host would correct them instantly. Weird no correction was made here. Guess he must be guilty!)
The allegation against Judge Kavanaugh is a very serious one and should not be taken lightly. Inasmuch as the seriousness can be recovered in the current mess, as Judge Napolitano said on Fox Business Network earlier, there probably will and should be an FBI investigation of some kind. But that does not change that there was ample time to deal with it seriously and without a circus well before this week.
Democrats deliberately took a different route, and now Psaki blames the subsequent “circus” on… Republicans.
Placing that blame on the GOP is a task talking points regurgitator Psaki undertook today with a beautiful, surely coincidental assist from the CNN journalist hosting the show.
Whatever you think of Psaki’s comments, there can be no question that the assertion of veritable respectful silence on the part of the Democrats is preposterously demonstrably false.
