We’re being Cloward-Pivened at the Texas-Mexico border. No question about it.
During today’s White House press briefing, reporters quizzed Josh Earnest about the surge of illegal aliens overrunning the border. The pace of children in particular trying to cross into the US illegally has increased 90% over last year. The surge began in 2012, shortly after President Obama unilaterally changed the status of many children who had been brought into the US illegally.
The head of Homeland Security, Jeh Johnson, has testified that “disinformation” in Central America is telling parents there that if their kids manage to reach the border, they will be allowed to stay. What is the source of this “disinformation?”
Somebody is coaching these kids to claim asylum. They’re not even trying to get away from Border Patrol. They’re crossing the Rio Grande and then seeking Border Patrol out, because they have been coached that our law works to the advantage of unaccompanied kids who reach the border and claim asylum. At least 50,000 of them have made the trek so far, overwhelming Border Patrol and the local communities’ ability to take care of them.
So that’s the setup for today’s briefing. Josh Earnest flew right past all that, to blame Republicans for the crisis.
White House press secretary Josh Earnest challenged Republicans, if they are truly concerned about border security, to back the comprehensive immigration reform package that passed the Senate last year and is strongly supported by President Obama.
“If we really wanted to solve this problem, one good way to do it is for those Republicans to get on board … and support common sense immigration reform,” Mr. Earnest told reporters.
Or, we could not do that and just enforce existing law as it’s written, instead of Obama re-writing it on the fly, as he has done twice on immigration and dozens of times on Obamacare.
Or, we could pass a law that does away with the asylum provision that’s attracting these kids to come in the first place.
Or, we could pass a security-only provision and see if Washington’s word is actually worth anything before moving on to other steps.
There are lots of things beyond the either/or fallacy that Earnest intentionally offers. Well, it’s not so much an offer as a hammer. “Don’t like total chaos on the border? Suck it, and do what we say, or we won’t fix it.”
How about we just let Team Obama run Washington DC, and the rest of us just go our own way for a while? They don’t like us, we don’t like them. Call it an amicable separation, then when they’re gone in 2017, we get back together.
Oh, wait. Hillary…She’ll be eve worse.
