Carney: Boehner Fiscal Cliff Offer is 'Magic Beans and Fairy Dust'

White House spokesman Jay Carney was dismissive of House Speaker John Boehner’s fiscal cliff offer today. Boehner on Monday offered a plan developed by Democrat Erskine Bowles. Carney, who is not an economist and whose boss has admitted that he is incapable of doing math above a 7th grade level, mocked Boehner’s offer.

QUESTION FROM ED HENRY: How can it be good government, then, when Speaker Boehner puts a plan on the table and this White House says it’s so ridiculous, in your words, that you’re not even going to do a counteroffer. Where’s the leadership to say, ‘Okay, we don’t like that, but here’s a counter?’ Why can’t you put something else on the table?

JAY CARNEY: It’s a couple sentences — it’s not a plan to say that we’re going to magically increase revenues through loophole closures and deduction caps with not a single element of specificity. So we don’t know who pays, we don’t know what we’re talking about in terms of actual legislation to increase revenues. It’s magic beans and fairy dust. The president has put forward specific proposals. Look, I acknowledge that not with any great specificity, there’s a little more meat on the bones in terms of their proposals on the spending cut side. When it comes to revenues, it doesn’t meet the test of balance or the necessary test of specificity.

If you take the Obama White House at face value, then this is their plan.

1. Hike taxes on “the rich,” which if done to a maximum level would fund the government for about a week.

2. Hike spending and give Obama carte blanche to raise the debt ceiling whenever he wants, while continuing to operate without a federal budget.

3. ???

4. Fiscal solvency!

Magic beans and fairy dust would at least get you a bean stalk or a cool little fairy to flit around.

If you do not take the Obama White House at face value, then all it is doing now is for show to run out the clock, take America over the fiscal cliff, and use the crisis to blame Republicans, amass more power for the president, and set the table to take over the House in 2014.
