On Tuesday, President Obama hosted the LA Galaxy soccer team at the White House. The Galaxy are struggling this season, but the White House ceremony was intended to celebrate the franchise’s achievements. The president took the opportunity to mention basketball several times — he must not be a soccer fan — and to razz star midfielder David Beckham about his age and his modeling career. Beckham re-signed with the Galaxy at the beginning of this season, turning down huge offers from major European clubs like Paris Saint-Germain so he and his family could stay in Los Angeles.
In an apparent attempt to laud the Galaxy’s roster of international star players, including Beckham, Irish international legend Robbie Keane and US international striker Landon Donovan, President Obama called the Galaxy the “Miami Heat of soccer.” As I said, Obama must not know much about soccer.
Both teams boast very high salary totals, and both teams boast major star players. But comparing the Galaxy to the Heat is an insult to the Galaxy: The Galaxy actually win championships. They won last season’s MLS Cup, defeating the Houston Dynamo in the final on a Donovan goal. It was their third MLS Cup victory. Obama even noted that at the beginning of the ceremony.
How many championships have LeBron’s star-studded Miami Heat won so far, Mr. President?
