Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) has RSVP’d to Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) invitation to join a Black History Month event honoring African-American senators throughout the country’s history.
When Scott announced the event last week, Booker hadn’t yet replied to the invitation. Former Sens. Carol Moseley Braun (D-Ill.), Roland Burris (D-Ill.), and William “Mo” Cowan (D-Mass.) had already agreed to join Scott, now the senior of two black lawmakers serving in the Senate.
That leaves just two invitations still hanging out there: 94-year-old Sen. Edward Brooke (R-Mass.) and President Obama, who was a senator for three years before moving into the Oval Office.
The Black History Month event, titled Honoring our Past and Celebrating our Future: Discussing Personal Journeys and a Nation’s Progress with America’s Black Senators, will be held at the Library of Congress at 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 25.
Senate Chaplain Barry Black will lead a nonpartisan discussion among the senators.
Reconstruction-era Senators Hiram Rhodes Revels (R-Miss.) and Blanche Kelso Bruce (R-Miss.) will be honored as well.
Members of the public who wish to attend the event can send an email to [email protected].
